Excerpt: Battle of Tali-Ihantala – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia After the initial Finnish advance of 1941, the Continuation War was stabilized to trench warfare with very little activity on either side. When the Siege of Leningrad was lifted in January 1944, the Stavka received orders to plan an offensive against Finland to push it out of the war. The Soviet attack on the Finnish front commenced on the Karelian Isthmus on June 9, 1944, (coordinated with the Allied Invasion of Normandy). Three armies were pitted there against the Finns, among them several experienced Guard formations. The attack soon breached the Finnish front line of defence in Valkeasaari on June 10 and the Finnish forces retreated to their secondary defence line, the VT-line which ran between Vammelsuu and Taipale). The Soviet attack was supported by a massive artillery barrage, air bombardments and armoured forces. The VT-line was breached in Sahakylä and Kuuterselkä on June 14 and after a failed counterattack in Kuuterselkä by the Finnish armoured division the Finnish defence had to be pulled back to the VKT-line (Viipuri (Vyborg) – Kuparsaari – Taipale). The abandonment of the VT-line was followed by a week of retreat and delaying battles. The Soviet offensive was crowned when the city of Viipuri (Vyborg) was captured by the Soviets on June 20 with only a short battle. Despite the Red Armys great success in smashing two Finnish defense lines and capturing of territory in just 10 days, it had failed to destroy the Finnish army which could concentrate on the VKT-line. Mannerheim, the Finnish C-in-C, had asked for German help on June 12, and on June 16 the Flight detachment Kuhlmey arrived in Finland. A few days later the battalion-sized 303. 1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam: The 'First Team

1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam: The ‘First Team

$189.43

On 1 July 1965 the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) was officially activated and was ordered to Vietnam beginning 28 July 1965. In a matter of three and half weeks the newly formed division, with 16,000 men and 434 helicopters–Chinooks (CH-47s), Flying Cranes (CH-54s), Mohawks (OV-1s), UH-1s and OH-13s–was prepared to enter combat. Within 90 days of becoming the Army’s first airmobile division, the ‘First Team’ was in combat as the first fully committed division of the Vietnam War. On 10 October 1965, in Operation ‘Shiny Bayonet’, the First Team initiated its first brigade-size airmobile action against the enemy. The division would go on to take part in many more air assaults and play a leading role in defence against the Tet offensive, driving out the NVA and Viet Cong invaders from Hue and, in Operation ‘Pegasus’, relieving the 3,500 U.S. Marines and 2,100 ARVN soldiers besieged by nearly 20,000 enemy at Khe Sanh. On 1 May 1970, the ‘First Team’ was ‘First into Cambodia’ hitting what was previously a Communist sanctuary but the campaign had severe political repercussions for the Nixon Administration. Pressure was mounting to withdraw US forces from the war. Although there would be further assault operations, the war was beginning to wind down and 26 March 1971 officially marked the end of duties in Vietnam for the 1st Cavalry Division, although it was only on 5 May 1971 that the colours moved from Vietnam to Fort Hood, Texas.

Air Assault
Air Assault

In nearly every military and humanitarian crisis that the United States has been involved in since World War II, projection forces have been deployed. These are the first units that are able to move into position with sufficient means to sustain prolonged military operations. The Fleet Marine Forces are these specialized units. A combination of air, ground, and support assets, the Marine Air Ground Task Forces maximize the combat power of each of these fighting elements.

The marine Expeditionary Unit or MEU is the smallest unit of the Marine Air Ground Task Forces. In collaboration with the Navy, these MEUs are the nation’s quick response team and are deployed in numerous locations around the world on very short notice. The MEU is led by a Marine Colonel. Approximately 2,200 Sailors and Marines will board three to four amphibious ships. These ships are designated as an Amphibious Squadron and have another 2,100 to 2,300 Sailors and Marines. The ships and men are known as an Amphibious Squadron led by a senior Navy Captain called Commodore. When joined together, the MEU and the Amphibious Squadron are known as an Amphibious Ready Group.

The 31st MEU is the only Forward Deployed Naval Force located in the Pacific-Asia region. There are four major elements to the MEU. The first is known as the CE or Command Element. This is the commanding officers and support staff. The main mission of the CE is to provide the command and coordination necessary for effective planning of operations. Reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and intelligence are also in the CE. All assets relating to reconnaissance, surveillance, and electronic countermeasure teams are also part of the CE.

The GCE or Ground Combat Element for the MEU is the BLT. This is a type of infantry battalion, but it’s also includes combat engineers, assault amphibian vehicles, artillery, and light armored vehicles. Each mission will require the tailoring of these pieces to meet expected needs.

The ACE or Aviation Combat Element provides both fixed wing and rotary air support. Depending upon the different missions and the space limitations, there may be only one squadron or a full Marine Aircraft wing. For the 31st MEU, it remains a reinforced squadron. Helicopters such as the CH-46, the CH-53E, and the UH-1N (known as the Huey), as well as the AV08B Harrier and two C-130s remain on standby in Okinawa, Japan to be utilized as needed. Air traffic control and aircraft maintenance are also included with the ACE.

The last element is the LCE or the Logistics Combat Element. The Combat Logistics Battalion is the LCE that is part of the MEU. It provides combat support, supply, EOD, military police, pay serves, medical and dental services, and pay services. Fairly small in numbers, these 300 Marines and Sailors are responsible for wide range of capabilities and services.

The MEU is well suited for security operations, amphibious operations, and is an expeditionary force. It can operate in foreign lands without a base or facilities. Thoroughly trained in what is commonly called “METS,” the MEU can provide amphibious raids to humanitarian assistance.

If you or a loved one served in the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, then you should show your pride with one of the many styles of Marine rings. Beautifully designed, you can order these Marine rings with the 31st MEU emblem on the side or under the semi-precious stone on top. For those that want to show off their pride in the 31st MEU, these Marine rings are a great choice.

What is the Pathfinder Platoon, 16th Air Assault Brigade and Parachute Regiments relationship?

They seen to be quite similar to me. If you can define each one’s individuality to me then that would be greatly appreciated.
They are all part of the British army. When I mean Parachute regiments I mean The Parachute Regiment. Aka The Paras.

Pathfinders set up landing areas for troops or helicopters. Think of them as the before hand surveyor for a drop zone or a landing zone. They determine if the way is clear; if it’s not, they determine if it can be cleared, and if so, they do it.

Air Assault is a means of deploying troops. It’s pretty much rappelling out of a helicopter with all your gear on your back, as well as deploying equipment that a helicopter might carry externally (hanging underneath, it’s called a “sling load”). A related concept is “Air Mobile”, where the helicopter lands and discharges troops. It’s often referred to generically as an air assault.

Parachute regiments deploy their troops and gear by parachute, usually from fixed wing aircraft. Helicopters can drop parachutists, but it’s not as practical.

Pathfinders usually go in first, and could make determinatiions as whether a zone is better for parachutists, helicopters, or could accomodate both.

That’s an extremely simplistic explanation. There are websites on each, simple websearches can turn up more in depth information.
