Excerpt: The sawsharks or saw sharks are an order (Pristiophoriformes) of sharks bearing long blade-like snouts edged with teeth, which they use to slash and disable their prey. Most occur in waters from South Africa to Australia and Japan, at depths of 40 metres (130 ft) and below; in 1960 the Bahamas sawshark was discovered in the deeper waters (640 m to 915 m) of the northwestern Caribbean. Sawsharks have a pair of long barbels about halfway along the snout. They have two dorsal fins, but lack anal fins, and range up to 170 centimetres (5.6 ft) in length. Genus Pliotrema has six gill slits, and Pristiophorus the more usual five. The teeth of the saw typically alternate between large and small. The sharks typically feed on fish, squid, and crustaceans, depending on species. They cruise the bottom, using the barbels and ampullae of Lorenzini on the saw to detect prey in mud or sand, then hit victims with side-to-side swipes of the saw, crippling them. Although they are similar in appearance, sawsharks are distinct from sawfish. Sawfish have a much larger maximum size, lack barbels, have evenly sized rather than alternating sawteeth, and have gill slits on their undersurface rather than on the side of the head. There are seven described (and two undescribed) species of sawshark known, in two genera. This genus consists of a single species, the sixgill sawshark, distinguished from Pristiophorus by having six pairs of gill slits. In addition, their rostral sawteeth have prominent transverse ridges on the basal ledges, and the large teeth hav… More:

Australia Lake Eyre, The Oodnadatta Track And Coober Pedy

Lake Eyre, the Oodnadatta Track and Coober Pedy.

Heading North

If you are planning on an outback tour of South Australia, have the right vehicle, enough time and are heading north, three stops you shouldn’t miss include Lake Eyre, the Oodnadatta Track and Coober Pedy.

As you travel north along the Stuart Highway half way between Adelaide and Alice Springs you will no doubt look forward to a pit stop at the township of Coober Pedy famous for producing most of the world’s opals, underground homes and a golf course completely absent of a blade of grass.

Apart from touring the features of the township that include visiting opal mines and an assortment of underground homes, hotels and churches, be sure to check out the Painted Desert, the Moon Plain and the Breakaways. Many of the fascinating and unique natural landscapes around the town have featured as the backdrop for many films such as Pitch Black, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome and Red Planet.

A bit off track from the Stuart Highway is the township of Oodnadatta, where you can join the Oodnadatta Track at its halfway point in either a northern or southern direction. The track itself is a 620km unsealed road that follows a traditional Aboriginal trade route between Maree (below Lake Eyre) to Marla a township that is now along the Stuart Highway. The original Ghan Railway ran alongside the track and the ruins of remaining railway sleepers and rubble provide interesting stopping opportunities.

Further afield from the track is Lake Eyre, known as Australia’s inland sea. Despite the fact that it has only filled to capacity 3 times in the last 150 years, Lake Eyre is a still a must see sight with breath taking salt flats as far as the eye can see. When the lake does fill, it teems with bird life. Make sure you have a 4WD if you venture out to the salt flats or treat yourself to an aerial view, which is the safest and most recommended way to view the region
