Are speed/distance machines really accurate?
Went to Golfsmith to get a new driver. I normally drive around 240-250 with my 10.5 burner and my drives tend to go pretty high up in the air even if I tee it up low. I picked 9.5 taylormade superfast driver and went to try it to the room where they have all the measuring machines set up. Took a few swings and the machine was showing my swing speed at 115mph and ball going 277-280! with huge right side spin, so it wasnt even going straight and still that far. The guy told me if I adjust my swing to hit it straight and with a real ball (not the driving range balls they have there) I’d be in 290s! That’s PGA’s average! And that was me not warmed up, wearing uncomfortable clothes. I bought the driver and took it to range the same day. 250-260 with a roll on straight shots. Do you think they bump up the speed/distance on purpose so that you just want to buy the club?
That’s you getting bam-boozled. Most of the simulators that clubfitter’s use are accurate. Unfortunately, almost all of them have a “boost” function. It inflates most of your stats, in short, making you think you hit it farther.
I don’t think that’d be Golfsmith’s policy, but probably someone on commission looking to make a sale.
As a note, any “clubfitter” who tells you to adjust your swing to a club doesn’t know what the he!l they’re talking about. Even though the major brands (Callway, Nike, Titleist, etc.) want to make you think it’s the right way. They make millions of clubs a year, all to one “standard” that they determine. You are an individual- what happens if you deviate from “standard”? The clubs you spend good, hard-earned money on shouldn’t have to be “adjusted to”. Would you do that with a suit? Absolutely not- you’d have it tailored to fit you. Same goes with golf clubs. YOU don’t change to make a club work; change the club so IT works for you.
