Who is the founder of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on July 3rd, 1937 in Del Mar, California, USA?

Bing Crosby and Pat O’ Brien are considered to be the founders of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, which brought pari-mutuel racing to the Del Mar Fair Grounds. The Fair Grounds opened in 1933, but it took a little longer to get the racetrack off the ground, so to speak.

Del Mar has hosts a Thoroughbred race meet in August, roughly paralleling the Saratoga race meet at Saratoga Springs, New York. “Der Bingle” and Pat O’ Brien had a mind to have a west coast version of Saratoga’s meet. The Del Mar meet has always been well-attended and is a fun meet to go to– you see some promising two-year-olds have their “coming out” races at this meet.

At various times, Del Mar has hosted other kinds of racing. There was a Standardbred meet held there for a while. (Del Mar is located on a flood plain, and when there’s significant rainfall, the backside of the track can flood. My best friend told me that at one of the Standardbred meets held there, the horses were standing knee-deep in water in some parts of the backside.)

Bing Crosby helped to popularize the track with his song “Where the Surf Meets the Turf.”

At one time, the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) held a yearling sale there to coincide with the race meet, but they were never able to consistently produce a sale that made potential consignors happy or to attract deep-pocket bidders, so they eventually abandoned Del Mar as a sales venue.

More recently, in 1996, Del Mar had the distinction of being the site of the ending of champion Cigar’s win streak, when Cigar went down to Dare and Go in the 1996 Pacific Classic. That was not a good day at the races, unless you had the winner. He paid 39-to-1.

It’s a beautiful track and the Del Mar meet has been one of the few race meets in California that has done well in mutuel handle and attendance. There has been some talk of having a special one-week meet at Del Mar to allow it to host the Breeders Cup races, but IMO that would be a bad idea. We don’t usually get much rain around the time of the Breeders Cup (late October-early November), but if we had a freak storm around that time, I don’t see how the track could avoid flooding.
