Installment of Universal Joint on Drive Shaft
Universal joint is a mechanical part that is popular among various applications. Generally, it can also be called u joint, universal coupling, Cardan joint, Hardy-Spicer joint, or Hooke’s joint.
It is a joint or coupling in a rigid rod that allows the rod to ‘bend’ in any direction. It consists of a pair of hinges located close together, oriented at 90° to each other, connected by a cross shaft. Moreover, it can allow positive transmission of rotating power at a much larger angle than is permissible with a flexible coupling. And it can transmit torque and motion.
One of configurations known as a double Cardan joint drive shaft partially overcomes the problem of jerky rotation. This configuration uses two U-joints joined by an intermediate shaft, with the second U-joint phased in relation to the first U-joint to cancel the changing angular velocity. It is commonly used in shafts that transmit rotary motion.
Universal joints can be widely used in all types of power transmission systems. They have a variety of applications. They can be used in food processing equipments, replacement for expensive gearboxes, and drives, etc. Besides, they are also commonly applied in connecting power take-off drive shafts in off-highway tractors that operate drawn machinery such as rotary grass mowers and feed grinders.
They can also be used in vehicles. They are located at both ends of a drive shaft and serve the purpose of transferring engine power and torque from the transmission to the drive wheels. However, after a certain period, they can wear out because of vibration and many other causes. In order to aviod more serious problems; you should replace the failed u joints on the drive shaft with new ones.
The first thing you should do is disassemble the driveshaft. Then you have to remove caps and unfasten the four holding clips on the caps. Be sure to aign the U joint tool with the yoke and twist the bolts until the cross and caps are at a distance which will enable the parallel cap’s removal. Be careful not to drive the cap being used to apply pressure into the other side of the yoke. Separate the yoke from the U- joint tool and the cap that has been pressed through.
Next, you may have to use a socket for centering the cross while the pressed cap is being pushed back from the other side of the yoke. And reinstall the u joint tool and twist the bolts until the left over cap is pushed to the other side of the yoke.
Thirdly, you just have to install new caps and follow the process which is exactly the opposite of removal. Twist the screw until the cap is pushed enough to go past the holding clip furrow. At last, you have to repeat this process for each cap until all the caps and cross are aligned with the yoke. In addition, you should check to make sure that cars do not make clunking noises when changing gear or vibrate with the speed of the transmission output.

Don’t bother trying to hollow out a wooden arrow shaft, it won’t work. All you will succeed in doing is making the shaft too weak to use as an arrow, if even that much. For complete instructions on how to make an arrow out of wood, go here:

The only reason aluminum and carbon-fiber shafting is hollow, is to keep the weight down, since they are much stronger than wood shafts of the same diameter and weight. There is no advantage to using a wooden tube — unless you really want to see your arrows shatter as soon as they are launched.
