Chapters: Stranger Than Paradise, Howard the Duck, Major League, Major League Ii, the Rocker, the Soloist, Welcome to Collinwood, American Splendor, the Fortune Cookie, Light of Day, Antwone Fisher, Against the Ropes, the Oh in Ohio, the Kid From Cleveland. Excerpt: Against the Ropes Against the Ropes is a 2004 drama movie . It was directed by Charles S. Dutton , in his motion-picture directorial debut. It is a fictionalized account of the American boxing manager Jackie Kallen , who was the first woman to become a success in the sport. Luther Shaw most likely represents James Toney , a boxer whom Kallen managed to a title despite a rocky relationship. Against the Ropes grossed less than $6 million in the US and was panned by critics, in part because of the resemblance to nearly all the other boxing movies, such as the Rocky series. As with other such movies, its climax is a bout for the championship. The film was shot primarily in Hamilton, Ontario , Canada at the Copps Coliseum . Plot The film begins with Jackie learning the boxing game with her father and uncle in a small gym when she is just a small girl. Later, she becomes the assistant to a Cleveland boxing promoter. Jackie’s boss then begins doing business with Sam LaRocca, a sports manager, during a middleweight championship fight. After the fight, LaRocca asks Jackie what she thought of the fight. Obviously unimpressed with Jackie’s knowledge of boxing, LaRocca offers her the fight’s loser’s contract for a dollar. She goes to visit the fighter at home, only to find him addicted to drugs. Enter Luther Shaw, a small time hood, based partly on James Toney . Kallen watches in mixed horror and fascination as Shaw pummels the former middleweight champ. She offers to manage him professionally. Although Shaw is at first hesitant,

The issue of tariffs played a key role in this election. The Democrats, with the support of farmers and laborers, wanted to lower tariffs in order to promote free trade, while the Republicans, backed by industry and big business, believed that higher tariffs were necessary to protect American manufacturing. Especially in industrializing regions, voters chose the Republican view on tariffs, as they gave the party a slim majority in the House.Overall results Party: Total seats (change): Seat percentage 80.1-100 % Republican: 80.1-100 % Democratic 6+ Republican gain: 6+ Democratic gain California District: Incumbent: Party: Elected: Status: Opponent See also (online edition) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at 1886 1890 item United States House of Re…

Excerpt: The Cleveland Street scandal occurred in 1889, when a homosexual male brothel in Cleveland Street, Fitzrovia, London, was discovered by police. At the time, sexual acts between men were illegal in Britain, and the brothel’s clients faced possible prosecution and certain social ostracism if discovered. It was rumoured that one of the brothel’s clients was Prince Albert Victor, who was the eldest son of the Prince of Wales and second-in-line to the British throne. The government was accused of covering up the scandal to protect the names of any aristocratic patrons. One of the clients, Lord Arthur Somerset, was an equerry to the Prince of Wales. He and the brothel keeper, Charles Hammond, managed to flee abroad before a prosecution could be brought. The rent boys, who also worked as messenger boys for the Post Office, were given light sentences and no clients were prosecuted. After Henry FitzRoy, Earl of Euston, was named in the press as a client, he successfully sued for libel. The British press never named Prince Albert Victor, and there is no evidence he ever visited the brothel, but his inclusion in the rumours has coloured biographers’ perceptions of him since. The scandal fuelled the attitude that male homosexuality was an aristocratic vice that corrupted lower-class youths. A few years later, such perceptions were still prevalent when the Marquess of Queensberry accused Oscar Wilde of being an active homosexual. Wilde sued Queensberry for libel but his case collapsed. He was arrested, found guilty of indecency, and condemned to two years’ hard labour. Illustration of Inspector Frederick Abberline from a contemporary newspaperIn July 1889, Police Constable Luke Hanks was investigating a theft from the London Central Telegraph Office. Dur… More:

Excerpt: The Empire State Express was one of the named passenger trains and onetime flagship of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad (a predecessor of the modern New York Central Railroad). It became the world’s first high-speed passenger train on September 14, 1891, when it covered the 436 miles (702 kilometers) between New York City and Buffalo in just 7 hours and 6 minutes (including stops). The train averaged 61.4 miles-per-hour (98.8 km/h), a new world speed record in rail travel, with an officially-recorded top speed of 82 mph (132 km/h), though observers claimed to have clocked the train at 112 mph (180 km/h), or 180 km/h. In short order, the train would gain worldwide celebrity, and its route would later stretch to 620 miles (998 kilometers), with Cleveland, Ohio as its western terminus. In addition to its other notable accomplishments, the Empire State was the first passenger train to maintain a regular schedule speed of over 52 mph (84 km/h), and the first to make runs of 142.88 miles (230 km) between stops (between New York City and Albany: the longest scheduled nonstop run ever attempted). Grover Cleveland had vetoed a similar bill in 1887. It was criticized as the “Billion Dollar Congress’” for its lavish spending and, for this reason it

The Toledo Volleyball Club seems to be one of those special girls’ volleyball clubs that really treat their girls like family. This holds true even for the most competitive of all teams, the national team. Frequent travelers, these players often spend more time with coaches and trainers than with siblings and parents, and its apparent that the organizers of this club volleyball program realized early on that the only way the girls could withstand the demands of this hectic schedule was by building close friendships and mentoring relationships.

Parents are sure to notice that the fees for the Toledo Volleyball Club are extremely reasonable. For example a development level team for players 13 and under is expected to pay in the range of $750 in fees, while youth program participants – those aged between 9 and 12 — pay around $400 in fees.

This level seems perfect for parents of players who are hoping to introduce their kids to college prep volleyball, but who are uncertain if their kids are really cut out for junior volleyball. Mind you, there are still added expenses, such as the strength and conditioning training and other incidentals that help the up and coming volleyball players also to turn into bona fide athletes, but these expenses are well worth it when you consider that they provide for portable skills.

At Toledo Volleyball Club the kids can try out the game, see if they like it, and who knows, perhaps train and learn and eventually go on to play college volleyball. the Club director is Michelle Hills; it was she who recognized that parents needed representation and instituted the position of parent rep coordinator, a position currently held by Renee Bowyer.

Emphasis is placed on training competent athletes and not only on training excellent volleyball players which in my mind should be encouraging to volleyball parents. This is accomplished with the help of strength training and also conditioning requirements. They come at an added expense, but seem well worth the extra money.

TVC has a produced a notable roster of volleyball players who’ve garnered national acclaim and recognition.
