Excerpt: The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is an order of chivalry associated with Scotland. The current version of the Order was founded in 1687 by King James VII of Scotland (also known as James II of England) who asserted that he was reviving an earlier Order. The Order consists of the Sovereign and sixteen Knights and Ladies, as well as certain “extra” knights (members of the British Royal Family and foreign monarchs). The Sovereign alone grants membership of the Order; he or she is not advised by the Government, as occurs with most other Orders. The Order’s primary emblem is the thistle, the national flower of Scotland. The motto is Nemo me impune lacessit (Latin for “No one provokes me with impunity”). The same motto appears on the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom for use in Scotland and some pound coins, and is also the motto of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, Scots Guards, and Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. The patron saint of the Order is St Andrew. Most British orders of chivalry cover the whole United Kingdom, but the three most exalted ones each pertain to one constituent country only. The Order of the Thistle, which pertains to Scotland, is the second-most senior in precedence. Its equivalent in England, The Most Noble Order of the Garter, is the oldest documented order of chivalry in the United Kingdom, dating to the middle fourteenth century. In 1783 an Irish equivalent, The Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick, was founded, but has now fallen dormant. James VII ordained the modern OrderJames VII claimed that he was reviving an earlier Order, but this issue is marked by widely varying claims. According to legend, Achaius, King of Scots (possibly coming to the aid of Óengus mac Fergusa, King of the Picts), while e… More:

Chapters: Brown University, Charlotte County, Virginia, Order of Saint Stephen of Hungary, Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, Committee of Correspondence, Brooks’s, the Club, Sandy Hook Light, Portman Estate, Kronens Artilleriregiment. Excerpt: Brooks’s is a London gentlemen’s club , founded in 1764 by 27 men, including four dukes . From its inception it was the meeting place for Whigs of the highest social order.Their original premises in Pall Mall were “farmed” or managed by the famous Almack (William Macall, who reversed the syllables of his unfashionably Scottish name) who also set up the iconic Almack’s Assembly Rooms in nearby Duke Street. The club is named after Almack’s successor Brooks, who only survived its rebuilding by three years. The current building on the west side of St. James’s Street was designed by Henry Holland and opened in 1778. It faces Boodle’s across the street whilst the Tory Carlton Club and White’s are just up the road. Its primary purpose was originally to provide a home away from home for the gentleman of the time, who was normally not at all domestic. At Brooks’s he could meet his friends (and avoid his and others’ ladies) at any time of the day or night. The club provided substantial but ordinary meals, to the point that complaints about the everlasting sameness led to the founding of Watier’s in 1806.The gaming rooms used to be one of the main attractions. At several tables in one, gentlemen would stake fortunes on whist and hazard . Gambling all night was common; all day and all night, not unheard of. When the stakes far exceeded any ordinary expenses, all the club accounts were commonly deducted from winnings, so that no bills were rendered to members. Numerous eccentric bets were and are made in the Brooks’s betting book. One extraordinary entry is

Excerpt: Il mondo della luna (The World in the Moon), Hob. 28/7, is an opera buffa by Joseph Haydn with a libretto by Carlo Goldoni, first performed at Eszterháza, Hungary on 3 August 1777. It was first written for the composer Baldassarre Galuppi and performed in Venice in the Carnival 1750, then adapted for Haydn’s version of the opera for the wedding celebrations of Count Nikolaus Esterházy, the younger son of Haydn’s patron, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy. Goldoni’s libretto had previously been set by four other composers. It is sometimes known by its German title Die Welt auf dem Monde. The roles of Ecclitico and Lisetta were written for Guglielmo Jermoli and his wife Maria Jermoli, but they left Eszterhaza shortly before the premiere. The opera is scored for two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, strings, continuo. A terrace in the house of the bogus astronomer Ecclitico; an observatory tower with a telescope. A starlit night, with full moonEcclitico and his four students sing a hymn to the moon, and Ecclitico boasts of how he can dupe the foolish – such as Buonafede, who now appears. Buonafede does not have a clue what the moon is. Ecclitico explains to him that through his powerful telescope he will be able to see the moon’s transparent surface all the way through the houses and will be capable of spying on the ladies as they undress before going to bed. Buonafede then attempts to view the moon through Ecclitico’s telescope while Ecclitico’s servants move caricatures in front of the telescope’s lens. The trick works: Buonafede describes what he thinks he has seen: a very beautiful young girl caressing an old man, a husband ready to punish his wife for her infidelity, and a man that completely dominates his fema…

Excerpt: The Rite of Spring, original French title, Le sacre du printemps (Russian: ), is a 1913 ballet with music by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, original choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky, and original set design and costumes by archaeologist and painter Nicholas Roerich, all under impresario Serge Diaghilev. The music’s innovative complex rhythmic structures, timbres, and use of dissonance have made it a seminal 20th century composition. The composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein said of one passage, “That page is sixty years old, but it’s never been topped for sophisticated handling of primitive rhythms…”, and of the work as a whole, “…it’s also got the best dissonances anyone ever thought up, and the best asymmetries and polytonalities and polyrhythms and whatever else you care to name.” A performance of the work lasts about 33 minutes. While the Russian title literally means “Sacred Spring”, the English title is based on the French title under which the work was premiered, although sacre is more precisely translated as “consecration”. It has the subtitle “Pictures from Pagan Russia” (French: Tableaux de la Russie païenne). The painter Nicholas Roerich shared his idea with Stravinsky in 1910, his fleeting vision of a pagan ritual in which a young girl dances

It’s amazing how many small groups form around town, and often you see that when you’re out and about. Not long ago, I was sitting at Starbucks, and I saw a group of women who were having their little book club. It was a fiction book club, and they asked me if I wished to read the book that they were reading, I looked at it, and it did look like a pretty good book, but it wasn’t my style.

Nevertheless, this is the first book club I’ve seen at this particular Starbucks, and I’ve also noticed people meeting in book club groups in various places over the last few years. However, this book club was doing, because it was all women, and they were giggling, talking, and laughing, and having such a great time, I thought I’d write an article about it and mention it.

After the group was over I asked one of the ladies; how did you form your club?

She said she got together with one of her friends, and they invited their friend, who invited another friend. Then there were four people in the group and then they went to Starbucks and started meeting, and another person join them in invited another friend.

Today, they have over 10 people in their book club, although only about 6-8 people show up at any one time. If you’d like to get out more, and meet with interesting people and discuss intellectual topics, perhaps you should form a book club.

It sounded pretty simple, it’s not as if they put an ad in the newspaper anything, and they had a pretty strong group. They were having such a good time, I just feel that other people should be doing this, rather than sitting around thinking about it.

Indeed, I hope you will please consider this, and form a women’s book club because it will be so much fun. All your friends don’t have to be online on your social networking page – you can have friends in the real world too. Please consider all this.
