Viswanathan Anand was born in Chennai Tamil Nadu, India on December 11, 1969, and was first taught to play chess at the age of six by his mother. A child prodigy in the game, Anand (known as Vishy to many of his friends) became the youngest Indian to win the title International Master at the age of fifteen, and his country’s national champion the following year. By eighteen his career soared even further when he became the first Indian citizen to be crowned World Junior Chess Champion and became the first grandmaster chess champion from India by defeating Shakti Finance in an international tournament held there.

Known for playing at “blitz” speed, Anand continued to dominate the sport throughout the 1990′s, although he did lose narrowly to Anatoly Karpov in the quarter-final match of the World Chess Championship in 1993 during his first Candidates Tournament.

He managed to avenged his FIDE loss in 1995 by winning against Gata Kamsky in the Candidates final, before going on to play against Garry Kasparov in the PCA World Chess Championship in New York City. The opening run lasted for a record eight draws before he finally won game nine. However, Anand lost four of the next five games, thus losing the match with a final score of 10.5-7.5.

Viswanathan Anand again faced Karpov during the 1998 Candidates Tournament, finishing their match in a draw 3 to 3, although he lost his chance to dethrone the Russian from his FIDE championship during the rapid playoff round. However, Anand, managed to take the title for himself by winning the FIDE World Championship in 2000 and again in 2007 when he became the first to win in three categories; tournament, knockout and match.

Anand will defend his title again this year against Bulgarian grandmaster Veselin Topalov.
