My motorcycle can only drive in first gear and neutral after wreck.?

I was knocked off my bike last week and after getting it back up I noticed the gear pedal was bent up. I got the pedal out strait but it’s up too high and it will only go between 1st and neutral…Other then that it runs like a champ…Oh it’s an old 81 Kawasaki Kz305.
Please help it’s my second vehicle or else I’m stuck with the wife’s caravan..

Just guessing, but:

Gear pedal is either out of alignment, or bent.

If it’s misaligned there’s probably a securing bolt on it somewhere which can be loosened off, then you reset it to the correct place and retighten. It may currently be that it’s only able to move up by “half” a gear, just enough to get it into neutral from 1st, but not quite enough to bite into 2nd (and even if it was, definitely not enough to get 3rd), although you get a full and totally unhelpful downstroke. Once it’s reset all will be OK.

If it’s bent and that’s what’s causing the problem, it’s time to go hunting for a replacement for you bike or a similar/related model (ebay is rich with scrapyards who have found a new, nationwide outlet for their recycled treasure), or seeing if you can get it straightened out either in a home workshop (if you have one) or a local metalworking place. Unbolt, pull off, fix/replace, put back on and rebolt.

Less happily/simply, you may have a bent linkage (if it’s a remote pedal) or gearshift shaft (if it’s direct). Hopefully a link can be replaced the same way as the pedal… but the main shifting shaft will be a pulling-the-engine-to-bits job which I decline to advise on, knowing nothing much of any use.
