The Vivaz Gets QWERTY with the Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro

It’s no secret that mobile phone makers would love nothing more than to extend the market reach of their successful mobile handsets beyond their initial market penetration.  It is now a common practice to make lite or mini versions of known heavyweights in the upscale markets to bring a watered-down version to a wider market. A more subtle way is to come out with new features that extend the product to markets that would prefer one form factor over another.

Hence, you see slider version of candybars and vice versa.  Sony Ericsson just did the same for its highly anticipated and recently launched Vivaz touchscreen Symbian flagship. This time sporting a QWERTY side slider form factor, the new Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro is lined up to appear in the markets this late spring.

Same Vivaz Features

The Vivaz Pro is, well, a Vivaz that has grown obese. It’s still the same quad band GSM with class 10 GPRS/EDGE data speeds on 2G as well as a dual band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA on 3G. You still get Hotspot surfing support with its WiFi 802.11b/g with DLNA and local high speed data connectivity with its Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for wireless and wired data synching, respectively. There’s a GPS receiver with WisePilot navigation for a voiced turn-by-turn navigation aided by Google Maps.

The same PowerVR SGX graphics processor found on the Satio powers the Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro but clocked at a higher 720 MHz.  It gets the same phone memory as the Vivaz at 75 MB with microSD external memory expandability for up to 16GB.  It also comes with the same 8 GB microSD card as part of its retail package.  But the same 1200 mAh Li-Po battery gets you only 12.5 hours of talk time on 2G, 30 minutes shorter than on the slimmer and lighter Vivaz.

The Pro gets the same 3.2 inch TFT resistive touchscreen with Wide VGA resolution and 16 million colors common with Symbian smartphones. Multimedia gets the usual stereo FM receiver with RDS, media players for the popular audio and video file formats, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth A2DP wireless stereo listening and TV-out (VGA resolution) ports for a truly exceptional multimedia experience.

Onboard memory is the same 75 MB with microSD expandability for up to 16GB and comes with a free 8GB microSD card in the retail package.  It uses the same 1200mAh Li-Po battery on the Vivaz bur for shorter 12.5 hours of talk time on 2G and 540 hours on standby.

But What’s Up with the Pro

Its basically more down than up. While you get most of the same functionality as the Vivaz, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro has grown a bit more obese as post “pros” do, if Sony were to be believed.  Being a Pro means a heftier body with a full QWERTY slider half shell, making it thicker and heavier from 12.5mm and 97g in the Vivaz to 15mm and 117g in the Pro.

It also lost 3 megapixels in camera resolution from the cutting edge 8 megapixel in the Vivaz to just 5 megapixels, but you still get geo tagging, face/smile detection autofocus/touch focus and LED flash as well as 702p video recording with video light and continuous autofocus.  Not entirely bad for a pro. It’s just Sony’s way of saying being a “Pro” has its price.

edge pro trem bar is too loose!?

i have a new ibanez and the edge pro trem is wayyy too loose…i have new bushings on it but it still swings loose…any suggestions???

If you remove the back cover,there should be an allen head set screw on the bottom and side of the trem arm hole that you can tighten.
