Sometimes materials more complicated than mere mixtures of compounds are said to be detergent. For instance, certain foods such as celery are said to be detergent or detersive to teeth.

Surfactants are water soluble salts of long chain saturated/unsaturated fatty acids.They reduce the angle of contact between oil and water,enabling water to ‘wet’ the oil and carry away greasy particles.
A molecule of surfactant consists of 2 parts:the ionic (hydrophilic) part and the long chain fatty acid(hydrophobic) part.When dissolved in water,the hydrophobic part of a surfactant molecule gets embedded in the greasy particle,while the hydrophilic part is attracted to the water.Many such molecles surround the greasy particle and this formation is known as a micelle.All the micelles come together and all the grease particles gets washed away.

Water softening is the act of reducing the dissolved calcium, magnesium, and to some degree manganese and ferrous iron ion concentration in hard water. A common water softener is sodium carbonate (Na2CO3).

The positive effect of detergents is that it can be used for cleaning even with hard water,which is not possible with soap as soaps react with the salts in hard water to produce insoluble precipitate.
The negative effect is that most detergents are synthetic and non-biodegradeable.
