Why can gold not be produced from iron by nuclear fusion?
You can start with iron, do a lot of fusion to it and end up with gold.
But it would be really hard. It occurs rarely in stars because it takes energy to convert iron to gold.
The binding energy per nucleon changes as you go along the periodic table. Up until iron, you get energy out every time you fuse little nuclei together. Things heavier than iron take up energy to be fused together.
This is why our nuclear power stations work by breaking apart nuclei much heavier than iron. Because it took energy to fuse those nuclei together, you can extract the energy by breaking them apart again.
Basically, iron->gold is possible, but it is not energetically favourable. It occurs in stars/supernovae etc because there’s loads of energy and very high pressure, but it’s a very rare process.
