Learn to Choose The Best Wedges
If you are still one of those players who is still only carrying one wedge in your golf bag you are basically throwing away strokes to your golfing buddies or other competitors. You have to add the benefits of a better wedge game to your arsenal to succeed and lower your scores. The best thing is that it’s simple to do.
There are four basic golf clubs for sale wedges that are available to the game of golf today. These wedges all have a particular place in your bag in terms of the shots you can hit with them. Since 70% of the scoring is done in golf from inside 100 yards it is essential to have these four wedges in your bag.
These wedges are:
The Pitching Wedge – This wedge is included in your set and is probably the “one” wedge that every player has. It is usually the club that is hit form about 100 to 125 yards form the pin. The loft on these clubs are somewhere between 46 and 50 degrees depending on the manufacturer. This will be the longest wedge in terms of distance in your bag.
The Gap Wedge – This wedge is typically the club that is left out of the so called “mix” because of its late introduction to the wedge game. This club is used to fill the gap between the pitching and sand wedges and can carry lofts between 50 and 54 degrees. These clubs are sold individually at your local retailer.
The Sand Wedge – Don’t be fooled by the name of this club into thinking it’s only for use from the sand. Its loft is somewhere between 55 and 59 degrees and provides a great amount of spin or stopping power. It can be purchased on its own or sometimes come with your set. You usually hit this club form 90 yards into the pin including the sand traps.
The Lob Wedge – These clubs must be purchase separately from your local retailer. They are used for shorter high shots around the green that you would like to stop quickly. They generally have a loft of 60 to 64 degrees and are a lot of fun to hit.

I purchased a gap wedge and it is actually shorter than my sand wedge (custom). I am topping the Gap?
Yesterday I purchased an expensive taylormade gap wedge and it is actually shorter than my sand wedge (custom made (an extra .75 inches longer (I’m 6’4))). I am topping this gap wedge pretty bad and not making solid contact.
What do you think I should do? Pay to have it extended? Take it back and have one custom made? Change my swing to learn how to hit it?

Being 6’4″ there is no doubt that you are going to need longer golf clubs. Even with long arms, most golfers 6’4″ I fit should be anywhere from 1 1/2″ – 2 1/2″ over men’s’ standard length. This would be the same reason why I (5’9″) wear 30 inseam pants and you might wear 34 inseam pants. If there are that many options available in dress shirts, suit coats, and pants, there should be that many options available to men and women in golf equipment. Fortunately there is. Its just that there inst any big and tall stores for golfers. (no pun intended). However, there are a few small equipment manufacturers and some club makers who can offer you what I am recommending. I will make a few recommendations later.
As for why, its simple. Most larger manufacturers don’t offer anything beyond 1″ over men’s standard length because they mass produce. That and the raw length of the shaft is typically only 1″ over men’s standard. So the end result is the big box stores offering 1″ over to those who are 6′ tall and taller. Retailers could offer to extend your set but most consumersaren’tt going to pay andshouldn’tt have to pay an extra $100 to have a set extended. A new set of irons is already $500.00 plus. Taking on an extra $100 just doesn’t seem fair.
Generally golfers are unaware of what they need. Most assume they should play a standard stock set across the board. However, there are a variety of grip types, grip sizes, shaft types, shaft flex, head size, length, loft, etc that are available and can greatly impact your game.
In addition to longer clubs, most players with your size typically have larger hands and or longer fingers. If you have large hands not only will it be difficult to grip the club (or place your hands) correctly with standard grips, it will be difficult to achieve light grip pressure (which is beyond important). If so, you should have your hand size measured. I measure from the first wrinkle of the wrist to the tip of the middle finger. If your hand measures 8″ you should consider a mid-size grip. If it is beyond that I would strongly consider a jumbo. I find the jumbo chamois to be the most popular.
As for the length of your gap wedge, if your set is standard men’s length, all your wedges should be 35″. The quick fix would be to have it extended with the rest of your clubs.
What I would recommend you consider is the following:
- Extending your set of clubs (approx 2″ irons, 1″ woods)
- Re grip your set with an oversize grip if needed
- Consider purchasing a new (custom fit/built) set in the next year.
Any of the factors I covered above in addition to fine tuning your swing can attribute to topping the ball which is a very common fault.
P.S. Do not, I repeat do not try to keep your head down as it will only reinforce you to bob up and down like a bobber in water and top the ball. The fault lies in your ill equipped equipment.
