2008 Ryder Cup-Official Highlights From the 37th Ryder Cup $24.99 Louisville, Kentucky – the birth place of Muhammad Ali and home to the Kentucky Derby played host to the 37th staging of the Ryder Cup. The US team, led by Paul Azinger, were coming off three successive defeats. It was crucial they stop the rot. But Europe, captained by Nick Faldo – Europe’s all time points record holder – looked to be favourites. Faldo’s team, a blend of experience and youth, seemed more than match for an American side that contained six rookies. But the Ryder Cup is MatchPlay, head to head competition against a backdrop of highly patriotic support. At a Pep rally held earlier in the week Azinger recruited the US fans as his team’s 13th man. Would it work? The answer, emphatically, was yes, and in dramatic fashion! The Official Film tells the blow by blow story of one of the truly great Ryder Cup encounters as, over three days of breathtaking golf, ‘Zinger’s heroes regain Samuel Ryder’s trophy. With unique, behind the scenes access, we relive the drama both on and off the course as once again, pride is restored to American golf. |

Excerpt: Jerome Kendrick “Jerry” Pate (born September 16, 1953) is an American golfer. Jerry Pate was born in Macon, Georgia. He later attended the University of Alabama and had a distinguished amateur career. He won the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1974 and the following year he was a member of victorious U.S. teams at the Walker Cup and the Eisenhower Trophy. He was also the low amateur at the 1975 U.S. Open. Pate turned professional in 1975 and was the medalist at the 1975 PGA Tour Qualifying School. He had a flying start to his professional career, winning the U.S. Open, which was to be his only major championship victory, and the Canadian Open. He was selected as the Rookie of the Year and Co-Player of the Year. Six more PGA Tour victories followed between 1977 and 1982, as well as several other titles around the world. In 1981 he was a member of a victorious United States Ryder Cup team. However shoulder injuries curtailed his career and he didn’t win a regular (under 50) professional title after his thirtieth birthday. Pate later served as a broadcast analyst for ABC, CBS and the BBC and set up a golf course design practice and a turf and irrigation company. In 2006 he returned to winning ways at the Champions Tour’s Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. He lives in Pensacola, Florida. Five performers present an evening of rowdy, raunchy, and humorous songs that encapsulate the various moods of the era and reflect Waller’s view of life as a journey meant for pleasure and play. Productions Ain’t Misbehavin’ opened in the Manhattan Theatre Club ‘s East 73rd Street cabaret on February 8, 1978 with featured singer Irene Cara . Its reception was such that it was decided to develop it into a full-scale production. Golf Pride

Everybody is in a rush. A rush to do this or that. To get up in the morning, to make breakfast, to dress, to go to school, to work, to go to the gym. In fact everybody is in a hurry to do many things which means everyone has an enormous amount of activities all day long. We manage to convince ourselves that everything we do is all important – and yet somehow as the day ends we are exhausted and are left with a vague feeling that we did not accomplish everything we set out to do.
The reason for this is quite simple. We live in a society that measures success on the basis of accomplishment – and accomplishment is measured on the basis of how much we do or how much we get. In turn we have conditioned ourselves to always think of the next move. To accomplish and get more you have to do more, so there is always something else. Another move, another set of actions.
This is where the problems start. We focus our thoughts and energy onto the next thing and not on what we are actually supposed to be doing.
When we focus on the next step, the next activity or our next action, we forget to concentrate and to live 100% that one thing we are doing in that specific moment in time. Pope John Paul II once said that we should learn from the past, plan for the future, but live the present – or words to that effect.
These are words of wisdom that should guide our every moment.
There are a few implications here, such as:
By learning from the past:
- you should learn to avoid mistakes and more importantly repeat those things that brought success or triumphant moments.
- neither dwell nor relive the past. The past is gone – finito, kaput. We must learn to let it go.
- treasure the good and the bad. Treasure it, not gloat over it or sink with it.
Plan for the future:
- set your sights high and aim for the sky.
- apply yesterdays lessons to plan for tomorrow.
- your plan will map out the road you must follow.
Live the present:
- every journey starts with one step. Today you will take the steps you must on the road you mapped out for the future.
- each moment, in other words your continuous present, must be lived will full concentration, with full dedication and passion. If you are with someone else, your child for example, your full focused energy and attention should be 100% dedicated to that person in that moment in time.
- a focused present, strengthened with the lessons of the past and the target for the future will result in less mistakes or negative results. It will always generate an action motivated from a freer perspective.
When you start applying this way of life you will find in the beginning that you are set in your ways so change will not be easy. If, however, you persist for a short while, you will find that it gets easier each time.
Then you will be surprised to find that everything gets better; not in a magical sense, after all there are no magical formulas, but in a real sense.
- Your day to day activities that are driven by your dedicated and focused attention to what you are doing as you are doing it, will show greater results. These results will go beyond, and this is the important part, beyond achieving things, to achieving wonderful things in terms of your relationship with others. One of the amazing things about people is that when they feel they are important in your eyes – and this will happen as you live the present when your are with them – they will try to give the best of themselves in return.
- Your past will begin to be made up of all these “presents” you are living day to day.
- Your future turns into your present and then your past, and all under that path with a heart you are taking, today.

Can you put a standard grip on a putter?
I am interested in putting on a grip like I would have on my irons (Golf Pride Multicompound) onto my Odyssey #9. Would I be able to do that?
Sure. Just use double-sided tape and Naptha. If you get water-activated two-way tape, use clear Windex with it.
1. Cut the old grip off. Since the shaft is steel, a normal box cutter (or Hyde knife) will work. I personally use a hook-blade in a box cutter. You need the hook when cutting grips off graphite shafts, so just having the one blade makes it easier for me.
2. Peel off the old tape. If you have one, an electric heat gun will help out a ton. Run the gun over the tape for 20 or so seconds. The tape will peel right off. The Naptha or Goo Gone will help remove any sticky remnants.
3. Apply the new two-way tape. You can play aroud here, if you like. By adding layers of masking tape, you can effectively make the grip bigger. I do this with my other clubs, but not with my putter. You can also make the grip smaller in diameter by stretching the grip further down the shaft than normal. Again, this is all preference; if you don’t want to try anything different, you don’t have to. I’m just putting it out there, to give you something to think about.
3a. Some people use 3/4″ tape, some (like me) use 2″ two-way tape. There is no “right” or “wrong” answer for this. For me, I find 2″ tape more time-effective… but that’s just me. If you use the 3/4″ tape, spiral it down the shaft. The 2″ tape just gets applied, then smoothed down.
4. From there, grab your grip and place your forefinger over the vent hole at the butt end of the grip. Pour some Naptha into the grip, cover the mouth of the grip with your free hand and shake it. Tip the mouth towards the shaft, release the vent hole and let the Naptha run onto the tape. Don’t sweat it if you miss- just pour a little onto the tape (it goes without saying some form of catchpan would be appropriate).
5. From here, make sure the graphics are aligned how you like. Pinch the mouth a touch, making it vertically oval-shaped. Slide the grip on, and push it all the way down. Make sure the buttcap of the grip is firmly against the butt of the shaft… if there’s any play, the grip isn’t all the way on. It’s OK if things didn’t line up perfectly on the first shot. You have time to ensure the buttcap is all the way on, the grip is slid properly down the shaft and the graphics are lined up how you like.
You’ll most likely see a little tape residue pushed up from the mouth of the grip and onto the shaft. That’s normal, and can easily be cleaned up with a Naptha (or Goo Gone) soaked paper towel or rag. The sooner you take care of it, the easier it is to clean up!
There’s roughly 5 steps, and it seems (to me) to read rather long, but it really isn’t difficult at all. Learning how to do this can also be fun, and allow you to customize not just the colors/style of your grips, but the size of them, as well. Case in point: my clubs are +1/16″ over standard for my bottom hand, +1/32″ for my top hand (left hand… I’m a lefty). Maybe you want bigger, or smaller grips? You never know unless you experiment… now you have the means to do so!
