It is situated in the Lincoln Memorial (constructed 191422), on the National Mall, Washington, D.C., U.S.A., and was unveiled in 1922. The 170-ton statue is composed of 28 blocks of white Georgia marble (Murphy Marble) and rises 30 feet (9.1 m) from the floor, including the 19-foot (5.8 m) seated figure (with armchair and footrest) upon an 11-foot (3.4 m) high pedestal. The figure of Lincoln gazes directly ahead and slightly down with an expression of gravity and solemnity that viewers have often found deeply moving. His frock coat is unbuttoned and a large flag is draped over the chair back and sides. French paid special attention to Lincolns expressive hands, which rest on the enormous arms of a circular, ceremonial chair, the fronts of which bear fasces, emblems of authority from Roman antiquity. Since gravity supposedly warps space and time, how will a manned mission to Mars know when to come back?
Is time faster or slower on Mars? Will the astronauts come back older or younger, and by how much? How will they know when the opportunity to return would be if time is different?
Even though a trip to Mars would involve high speeds compared to Earth standards, the speeds are still incredibly small compared to the speed of light so time dilation and / or space contraction caused by Special Relativity is negligible.
The equation giving the time dilation effect is
Ts/Te=SQRT[1-(v/c)^2]
where Ts & Te are Time on spaceship and Time on Earth respectively, V=velocity of ship, and c is the speed of light in a vacuum.
The ship would reach about 15km/s at most. The speed of light is 300,000 km/s.
So v/c is only 0.00005 & (v/c)^2 = 0.0000000025
So Ts/Te= SQRT (1 – 0.0000000025) = 0.9999999987
Suppose in round figures the ship stays at this speed for a full year (6 months there and 6 months back) The ships clock would be less than 4/10ths of a second behind earth time!
Gravity effects are just as negligible and would work the opposite way. We on earth because we are in a gravity field would slow our clocks as compared to the ships since it is basically outside any gravitational field as it travels to and from Mars so even if the time errors were more significant they would rend to cancel out (gravity slowing our clocks and speed slowing the ship’s clocks!)
The Earth’s gravity is tiny and Mars’ gravity tinier still (1/3 Earth’s) compared to something like say, our Sun! Even near our Sun the warping of space-time is minimal. Mercury’s orbit about the Sun only moves roughly 43 arc-seconds (3600 arc-seconds = 1 degree) per century due to space warping effects!
So there’s no problem.
Interestingly however is that Special and General Relativity DO affect our GPS system. As the GPS satellites speed through their orbits above Earth, the time on board the satellites dilates (slows down) AND because they are farther from Earth’s gravitational field, their time also contracts (speeds up). The dilation does NOT equal the time contraction so time errors are introduced! Again the error is extremely small but since the GPS needs extremely accurate time measurements to work, the error (unlike our trip to Mars) must be accounted for and it is.
