Can you turn a 6 iron in to a 3 iron or pitching wedge by bending and adjusting loft and lie?

Ive always wondered if you could take eight 6 irons, and have them bent into the correct corresponding loft/lie angles of a typical 3-pw set by bending and adjusting without compromising the strength of the steel. I ask because looking at individual iron prices the 6 iron is by far the cheapest, most likely do to being the demo iron of choice. So wondering if anybody has attempted to create a complete set of golf irons all made from 6 irons. If so what was the outcome?

There is a reason that the Length, Lie, Loft and Length.

A 6 iron will fly father than a 7 iron for 2 reasons. 1) Length – Irons are built in length increments of a 1/2 inch. (progressively shorter from the 3 iron on down) The extra length all be it minimal will create additional swing speed resulting in more distance. 2) Loft – Is the other half of the equation. Loft progressions start at about 21* on most standard 3 irons and progressively increase by an average 4 degrees and may vary by set/mfg. The stronger loft and extra length of a 6 iron V.S. a 7 iron should be enough for an average golfer to hit the 6 iron 10-18 yards farther.

To get back to your question, the answer is NO. First of all a standard cast stainless iron head can only be bent about 4 degree one way or the other. Unfortunately you can only bend stainless irons 2 maybe 3 times as they will likely crack and break at the hosel. If you were to bend the lofts then you would also have to bend the lie angle of each iron. Bending both the lie and loft more than 4 degree will certainly snap the head in two. Forged irons are more mailable and may be easier to bend.

The progression of the lie angle is approximately 1* starting at about 59* in the 3 iron and increasing by 1* through the wedges.

There is a company that sells clubs that are all the same length but it doesn’t work. I would find it hard to believe anyone could hit a 3 iron that was 37″ any farther than a 5 iron. For a tall golfer it would be very bad idea to try. The length of the club is far too important to mess with.
