Jones Pelz

There’s no arguing that while you might never acquire a professional golf swing, there’s no reason you can’t learn to putt at the highest level. To do that, though, you have to practice. Here’s what to practice to get you started down that road.
First, practice one-foot putts. Get the feeling that the putter is accompanying the ball into the hole. Because putts like this are so easy to make, there is no pressure, and you will make a pure stroke. There will be no subconscious adjustments to get the ball in the hole or avoid missing. It is the pure stroke that you should use for every putt. Also, making putt after putt without a miss builds up a feeling that you are a great putter, since you never miss. Even though it’s only a one-foot putt, the more often you see the ball go in the hole without missing, you more you believe in yourself.
Second, learn to read greens. A good stroke will send the ball exactly where you want it to go, but that needs to be the direction that will take it into the hole. Spend at least half your time on the practice green setting the ball down on a slope and making your read, then hitting it. If you misread the break, set down another ball in the same place. Walk all the way around the putt, looking at it from all sides, until you see the break you missed. Learning from where to look for break is important.
Third, find out at what speed you like the ball to be traveling when it gets to the hole. Forget the Dave Pelz 17 inches stuff. This is personal. You might like the ball to creep up on the hole and fall in with a roll or two left. Or you might prefer that the ball runs smartly up the hole and stops several feet past if it misses. Whatever. Just like you have a personal swing tempo that feels right, you have a personal ball speed that feels right. You need to find it. Why? Because,
Fourth, speed determines line. The line to the hole is dependent on the speed the ball is traveling across the ground. The slower it rolls, the more the ball will be affected by slope. The faster you roll it, the less. The ball can take two different paths to the hole if it is hit at two different speeds. Essentially, you can’t do number two until you’ve done number three.
Fifth, practice approach putting, from fifteen to 35 feet. Golf is a two-putt game. With these longer putts, take a glance at the line, but spend your time feeling for the speed. When the speed is right, and your line is close enough, you will leave approach putts right next to the hole, and you will be surprised at how often they go in.
Bob Jones is a golf researcher who can show you the reason why you don’t strike the ball as consistently as you would like to. It’s a little thing, and anyone learn to do it right, in just minutes, right at home. Find out what it is in this FREE download at www.therecreationalgolfer.com.
