13th-Century Roman Catholic Priests $22.63 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Gui D’ussel, Nicholas of Arbroath, Pierre Clergue, Peter González, Amaury de Montfort, Canon of York, Thomas of Cantimpré, Brother Robert, Bernardus Compostellanus Junior, Richard of Ingworth, William de Stanwey, Serlo, Roger de Wynkleigh, Dearmid O’cuana. Excerpt: Gui d’Ussel, d’Ussèl, or d’Uisel (fl. 11951209) was a turn-of-the-thirteenth-century troubadour of the Limousin. Twenty of his poems survive: eight cansos, two pastorelas, two coblas, and eight tensos, several with his relatives and including a partimen with Maria de Ventadorn. Four of his cansos melodies remain. According to his vida, Gui was the youngest of three sons of a wealthy noble family of the castle Ussel-sur-Sarzonne, northeast of Ventadorn. He and his brothers Ebles and Peire, as well as his cousin Elias, are all reputed troubadours and castellans of Ussel according to the author of the vida, who makes Gui himself a canon of Montferrand and Brioude in the diocese of Clermont. Among his relatives Gui was known for his cansos. The only confirmation of Gui’s family from outside his vida is a reference to the brothers Guido and Eblo Usseli donating land to the abbey of Bonaigue. Gui’s biographer believed him to have been in love with Malgarita, wife of Rainaut VI, viscount of Aubusson. He supposedly later fell in love with Guillemette de Comborn, wife of Dalfi d’Alvernha, and composed many songs about her. Gui spent almost his entire life in the Limousin and Auvergne, rarely travelling abroad. Gui addresses several of his songs to Maria de Ventadorn (including the partimen) and makes reference to Peter II of Aragon in one which survives with a melody. The reference to Peter’s queen in the song’s razo puts the date of its composition in 1204 or later, after Peter’s marria… |

Excerpt: Abraham of Aragon was a Jewish physician specializing in diseases of the eye who flourished in the middle of the thirteenth century CE. Shortly after the Council of Béziers, in 1246 had forbidden Jewish physicians to practise, Abraham was requested by Alphonse Capet , count of Poitou and Toulouse , and brother of Louis IX of France , to treat him for an infection of the eye. The count at first implored Abraham’s help in vain; for he, being a man of independent spirit, held stoutly to the opinion that even the brother of a king was not exempt from the decree of a council. It was only after the seigneur of Lunel , with the assistance of his Jewish agent, had persistently pleaded with Abraham that the latter consented to cure the count. 1610 in Law: Basque Witch Trials, Dr. Bonham’s Case, Case of Proclamations, Aldred’s Case $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Basque witch trials of the 17th century represent the most ambitious attempt at rooting out witchcraft ever undertaken by the Spanish Inquisition. The trial of the Basque witches at Logroño, near Navarre, in northern Spain, which began in January 1609, against the background of similar persecutions conducted in Labourd by Pierre de Lancre, was almost certainly the biggest single event of its kind in history. By the end some 7,000 cases had been examined by the Inquisition. Although Logroño is not a Basque city, it was the setting for an Inquisition tribunal responsible for the Kingdom of Navarre, Alava, Gipuzkoa, Biscay, La Rioja and the North of Burgos and Soria. Among the accused were not only women (although they predominated), but also children and men, including priests guilty of healing with nóminas, amulets with names of saints. The first phase ended in 1610, with a declaration of auto de fé against thirty-one of the accused, twelve or eleven of whom were burned to death (five of them symbolically, as they had died before auto da fé). Thereafter proceedings were suspended until the inquisitors had a chance to gather further evidence, on what they believed to be a widespread witch cult in the Basque region. Alonso Salazar Frias, the junior inquisitor and a lawyer by training, was delegated to examine the matter at length. Armed with an Edict of Grace, promising pardon to all those who voluntarily reported themselves and denounced their accomplices, he traveled across the countryside during the year 1611, mainly in the vicinity of Zugarramurdi, near the French border, where a cave and a water stream (Olabidea or Infernuko erreka, “Hell’s stream”) were said to be the meeting place of the witches. As was usual in cases of this kind, |

Maine is the northernmost portion of New England and is the easternmost state in the contiguous United States and the easternmost in all the United States. It is known for its sceneryits jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, and its heavily forested interioras well as for its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams. The original inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine were Algonquian-speaking peoples. The first European settlement in Maine was in 1604 by a French party. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples wiped out many of them over the years. As Maine entered the 18th century, only a half dozen European settlements still survived. Patriot and British forces contended for Maine’s territory during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Maine was an exclave of Massachusetts until 1820, when as a result of the growing population and a political agreement regarding slavery, it became the 23rd state on March 15 under the Missouri Compromise. Maine is the only U.S. state to have a name that is one syllable long… More: |

As a longtime member of the Puget Sound Region the Northwest Juniors Volleyball Club has managed to grow into the largest junior volleyball club in the Northwest while setting a very high standard for other junior club programs in the state of Washington to attain.
Founded in 1972, NWJrs not only offers programs to the junior volleyball club but offers and extensive number of events specifically to all youth throughout the summer. Programs include summer volleyball camps where entrants receive a free Baden volleyball (Baden and Adidas are the club’s sponsors) if they sign up before May 31, and a series of outdoor programs with the mission to encourage entrants to get outside and play volleyball. Events include a beach volleyball clinic, a four-against-four grass league, a two-against-two and four-against-four beach volleyball tournament series and the Washington State Games which will have a grass volleyball tournament, and will offer junior volleyball players the chance to participate in a six-on-six and doubles tournaments.
Volleyball Tournaments – Opportunities To Play
One-day tournaments like the NW Juniors Adidas Classics and the Baden Classics as well as the multi-day inter-regional events such as the two-day Martin Luther King Tournament in January, the three-day Adidas NW Juniors President’s Day Tournament in February, the two-day Spring Classic Tournament in March and the Northwest Juniors Memorial Day Weekend Tournament in May offer many opportunities for area junior players to touch a ball, learn the game, compete and play.
You would think that this would fill any junior programs plate, but I haven’t yet pointed out the outdoor volleyball programs available. NW Juniors traditionally hosts a long outdoor schedule of events which include a growing number of beach volleyball tournaments for juniors and college athletes.
For 2010, NWJrs has 18 teams which serve the Eastside, Edmonds and Kent Areas and are comprised of elite teams: one 17s, one 16s, two 15s and one 14s and for local and regional – one 17s, two 16s, three 15s, three 14s, two 13s, two 12s.
Director Tony Miranda’s bio reads like a “you name it and I’ve done it” list of junior volleyball coaching experience. Former Head Volleyball Coach Bellevue Community College (2001 – 2004) 2002 NWAACC Coach of the Year, 2001 and 2002 NWAACC Northern Division Coach of the Year (124-76 overall record at Bellevue CC). I’m starting a go green club in my junior high. Any suggestions or guidelines?
I have never been in a charge of a club before. (Two of my friends are also in charge of the club).
Unless you are an anarchy club, only one person may be ‘in-charge’ at any given time. Get yourself ‘Robert’s Rule of Order’ (http://www.robertsrules.com/) If anything else, you and your friends will learn the basics of how every entity that meets and runs efficiently operates. This will be an excellent and instructive learning process. After that your club may flourish because it will have what is needed most for anything to have a chance to survive: order, composition and harmony. After that, please be a smart ‘green’ club and do not become part of the hysterical, manipulative crowd of cowed vapid souls. Be smart, curious and never satisifed with pat responses. Study your subject matter and know it better than anyone. By doing this you will begin to see quickly just how specious so much of what is propagated as truth and fact is nothing but hyperbole and agenda driven redirection to serve new masters in the making.
