Kids Golf

The way to know kids’ golf talent
How many times have you heard adults say, “I wish I would have started at his age.” Learning the game of golf at a young age is obviously a good thing and playing good golf at a young age is even better. The question for many parents is whether their child is just a good player, or does that child have a chance to be a great player. Recognizing a junior golfer’s potential isn’t easy, especially if the parents aren’t golfers themselves.
The first thing to remember, before we even talk about a child’s potential, is encouragement. All juniors start golfing because someone encourages them to play the game. It may be a parent, friend or coach. This encouragement, along with access to golf clubs and a course, is the key. So remember to encourage the junior throughout his or her career.
When looking for potential in junior golfers, you have to remember that each junior is going to grow and learn at different rates. Some junior golfers don’t score as well simply because they can’t hit the ball as far as other kids their age. Many times that’s just because they’re physically smaller.
So when you’re looking for your child’s potential at a young age, don’t just look at their scores. Watch how they play the game, see how they chip and putt, and look at their shot selection.
A short-hitting junior usually has a pretty good short game. They realize they can’t hit as far as the rest of the players their age, but they have also figured out that they can make up for it by chipping and putting well.
Many juniors understand the game instantly, while most kids are just trying to hit the ball as far as they can. That is a sign of real potential.
As a junior golfer gets older, tournaments become more important, whether it’s the junior championship at your club or an AJGA (American Junior Golf Association) tournament.

When can you start golfing with the kids?
I have some general questions about golf and kids. Our daughter is 3 and has started coming with us to the range and loves it. We don’t want to buy her a real set yet since it’s pretty early and we want it to be fun for her, but can she start training with us? Also, she’s usually right handed but when she tries to swing, she prefers left, is that temporary or will we have to by her lefty clubs in the future?
I’ve taught toddlers and it’s quite enjoyable.
The first thing you want to do is bring some chalk (I used the playschool chalk). The reason for the chalk is that you have to draw around their feet so they know where to stand.
Put the ball just inside of their left heel and move their left toe 45 degrees out and make sure their feet are not more than 12-15 inches apart.
The next thing to do is to get them to grip the club. Toddlers won’t understand the grip so just make sure the right hand is below the left hand, don’t try to over lap or anything else just make sure their left hand is on top and right hand is on the bottom. If their hands are a few inches away from each other then don’t worry about it.
The next thing to do is to draw a half circle from the rubber tee (please use mats) around their body to the back of their right heel. Also Draw a straight line from the tee forward of the tee for about 4-6 inches.
Have them grip their little hands tight and help them swing inside and say squeeze the hands. Stand behind and over them with your right hand on their hand and help them get the feel then let them 1st try to hit the tee.
A 3 year old may only hit the ball 6 feet. Applaud and compliment him or her every time they make contact. Do not speak to them as if they are adults. I’ve only taught little boys and after they would hit 5 golf balls I would let them throw 5-10 golf balls out on the range.
Understand that a toddler has an attention span to hit 5-10 golf balls then they may want to play. Pushing them to hit golf balls when they want to play will only alienate them. Sometimes I would sit on the mat and draw with the chalk with them. When they want to stop. Stop!. If they only want to hit 10 golf balls and quit then let them quit. Do not talk to them as if they are their to learn golf. They are their to be with Mom, Dad, Grandpa, Grandma and family. They are only playing golf because they want to have fun with you so you must make it fun.
As they are about to begin to swing swing say : “stand in the holes” (Where you drew the chalk around their feet) and swing. When they lift the club straight up say follow the circle. Remember to tell them to squeeze their little hands as tight as they can.
This lesson is for a right handed golfer. Left handed golfers can play right handed. I’m teaching one now. You have to make the decision. My grandson is ambidextrous and prefers the left but left today – right tomorrow. If you’re a righty then teach righty. If you want to teach lefty then reverse the lesson as I have outlined all the things to do for a right handed golfer.
Buy just one or two clubs. An 8 iron to start with. If you have a lot of patience then get an 8 for a lefty and a righty and let her play but you’ll need a lot of patience. I started my grandson out lefty and switched him to righty.
Have a lot of fun
