Is it possible (practical?) for a woman to use men’s “shortened” clubs?
I am trying to teach my 23 year old daughter, who is 5’5″ and kinda chunky, to play golf. Rather than run out and pay $600 for a set of “ladies clubs”, I have a novel idea: I have a very good set of Cleveland Men’s TA-5 graphite clubs in the garage (I bought new irons recently). Would it be reasonable to ask a pro shop to literally SAW my men’s clubs down to fit her size and install new grips? I would guess they would want maybe $15 per club to do this. Or is this incredibly stupid and a waste of time? What length for roughly each club would I have to reduce it to? Many thanks for THOUGHFUL and PRACTICAL observations!!
Daughter tried to hit with those Clevelands and clearly, they are too long by maybe 2 to 3 inches or something like that. We HAVE gone to the range and she tried to use those Clevelands. Yes, I have considered simply buying a used set of “ladies clubs” from Craigslist locally but have not acted on that initiative-yet.
Yes it is possible, but it’s not that practical and it’s definitely not a good idea. Frankly, you would wind up spending over $100 to essentially ruin a perfectly good set of clubs.
Golfclubs are very precise instruments and compromising their design will have undesired effects if you don’t know what you’re doing. As mentioned, shortening the club will affect the flex, although frankly it won’t really affect it that much. Still, she would be playing with a mens flex club which is probably too stiff for a beginning female, unless you were playing A Flex irons. Second, mens clubs are going to be a bit too upright for a woman, and shortening them will only make them more upright.
If money is the consideration I would recommend purchasing a lady’s starter set for $150 or so, which isn’t much more than what you’d pay to cut your irons down and regrip them. The clubs would fit her body and swing, and you wouldn’t be trashing the irons you have. You can also go to a store like Golfsmith and trade your old irons in for store credit, so you could wind up spending as much, or less, than your idea while getting clubs that will actually work for her.
Frankly, any shop that would cut down your irons and regrip them, without warning you that it’s a bad idea, shouldn’t be trusted.
