In this article, it is my intention to explain as simply as possible, how music scales are formed; this is a bit of music technology. The dreaded music scales; but nothing for you to worry about. Scales have been the curse of every young music student for generations. But they do not have to be. There is an easier way to learn your scales. However if you wish to become a true musician you will have to practice them, remember Practice makes musicians, there is no way round that hurdle, sorry. If you can understand what I have put below, you will have no problem learning how to play music. This article is number six in a set of seven, each one teaching you a little bit more music technology, moving you closer to your first song in the seventh article. Let’s have some Fun.
1. Anyway check this out. We have in the previous article, dealt with the scale of C major. Lets just recap here; if you are familiar with White keys and can point out the C note to the left of the middle twin black keys; start at this C note and go right to the next C note, for instance going up the keyboard, all white keys; C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. That is the scale of C major. That is the easiest scale to learn, you just did. Now follow this closely, if we count each key on the keyboard as one note, with that I mean black and white keys. Ok, if we now look at the C, scale and count the notes from key to key, so from C, to E, we can count four notes not including the C, itself; then from E, to G, we can count three notes.
Therefore from C, to D, we count two notes; from D, to E, we count two notes; from E, to F, we see only one note; from F, to G, two notes; from G, to A, two notes; A, to B, two notes; and from B, to C, again only one note; This shows up as “2/2/1/2/2/2/1. This is a very important sequence and as you see quite easy to remember, I suggest you do. Now if we apply that pattern or sequence, to start on any note on your keyboard you will find your scale immediately, black or white keys.
2. So, if we apply it to say, B flat, which looks like this Bb, and is the black key left of B, we would see our scale of Bb major. This would of course include black and white keys. Try it, make a note of your start position then count the sequence. If we start with F#, that’s the black key to the right of F, we will see F# major, and so on right through the keyboard. There you have it your first Techy music lesson, you have learnt Twelve Major scales. Write them down as you play them.
3. Study, play and say. Say the notes as you play them, this way you will remember. Now to expand this a step further, if we call the single note shift a “semitone” and the two note shift a “tone” this will show as “2/2/1/2/2/2/1″ to read as “tone/tone/semitone/tone/tone/tone/semitone” This bit of tetchy info, will come in very handy later on if you can remember it, but don’t worry if you can’t. Just write it down for reference you will need it later. I know we are all about playing for fun, but I thought it might be useful to highlight this pattern or sequence so as to best understand scales, for future reference.
4. This last bit may help you follow the process above. Look at this note sequence so it’s easier to follow. This is your keyboard from any A, key to the next A, key. “A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A”. To make things a little clearer here, when you see a sharp “black key” this is to the right of the main note, “white key”, you will also see that it lies to the left of the next main note, “white key” so this also means that the black keys can be called flat notes. You see A# is also Bb. Think about that for a sec.
Look at your keyboard play from A, go right and play and say every note to the next A; and call the black notes sharp. Now play from that A, play back down, play and say this time call the black notes flat. Keep that in mind maybe write it down, but don’t worry about it,t it will make sense later on. It would make sense if you keep a record of all the things you are picking up, it will all come in useful if and when you take up your online lessons. Everything will click into place, believe it. This is all part of teaching yourself to play the piano. I wish you lots of fun.
