A comparative analysis of control techniques for formation flying spacecraft in an Earth/Moon-Sun L(2)-centered lissajous orbit .

A comparative analysis of control techniques for formation flying spacecraft in an Earth/Moon-Sun L(2)-centered lissajous orbit .

$49.99

In this thesis, several control techniques are applied to an occulter satellite for a given formation flying mission. This research is in collaboration with the Flight Dynamics Analysis branch at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The spacecraft is part of a leader-follower configuration which orbits about the Earth/Moon-Sun L2 libration point in a lissajous orbit. A controller is required to maintain a distance of 50,000 km between the occulter and the leader satellite in the radial direction with respect to the orbit. The occulter is allowed a tolerance range of 10 m within the “shadow” of the leader. In addition, the controller must also minimize the fuel usage (Deltav) needed to maintain the occulter’s trajectory.;The spacecraft model follows the equations of motion defined by the circular restricted three body problem (CR3BP), where the primary bodies are defined to be the Earth/Moon system and the Sun. The dynamic model also incorporates thruster errors and misalignments, orbital sensor noise, environmental perturbations and disturbances, and additional modeling errors/uncertainties.;The control techniques analyzed in this paper consist of several linear (PID, Linear Quadratic Regulator, and Hinfinity) and one nonlinear controller (Sliding Mode Control). All control techniques are compared based on the overall minimization of trajectory error and fuel usage, ease of implementation, and robustness against disturbances and perturbations such as solar radiation pressure and thruster misalignments.;The results of this research show that of the control techniques analyzed, the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and Sliding Mode Control (SMC) satisfy the mission requirements. While LQR uses less fuel to satisfy given mission requirements, the SMC would also be a suitable choice of control if a mission weighted accuracy over fuel usage.

A feedback linearization approach for panel flutter suppression with piezoelectric actuation.

A feedback linearization approach for panel flutter suppression with piezoelectric actuation.

$49.99

A panel is subject to dynamic instability when induced aerodynamic loads under the supersonic/hypersonic environment result in a self-excited oscillation called panel flutter. The panel of an aircraft that flies at supersonic speed or a structural panel that is in fluid flow at such regime may experience panel flutter. A plate with highly distributed piezoelectric actuators and sensors connected to processing networks, referred to as intelligent plate can actively control its vibrations. The objective of this research is to analytically demonstrate panel flutter suppression using piezoelectric actuation based on feedback linearization controllers.;A nonlinear control system is formulated using the nonlinear dynamic equations for a simply supported rectangular panel with piezoelectric layers based on Galerkin’s method with modal expansions of nonlinear partial differential equation obtained from von Karman large-deflection plate theory, which accounts for the structure nonlinearity. The nonlinear equations also account for loads such as externally applied in-plane loads, aerodynamic loads, and electrical displacements. The aerodynamic loads are given by the first-order piston theory or the quasi-steady supersonic theory. The control inputs are given by the electric fields required to drive the actuators based on piezoelectric actuation, which is modeled by linear piezoelectric constitutive relations. Outputs of the nonlinear system are feedback and used to transform it into an equivalent controllable linear system in new coordinates by formulating nonlinear feedback control laws, which cancel the nonlinear dynamics resulting in a linear system. The pole placement technique is then employed to make the states of the feedback linearized models locally asymptotically stable at a given equilibrium.;Numerical simulations are carried out for the closed-loop systems at dynamic pressures higher than the critical dynamic pressures for the onset of panel flutter, where

A p-adaptive stabilized finite element method for fluid dynamics.

A p-adaptive stabilized finite element method for fluid dynamics.

$49.99

Stabilized finite element methods have been shown to yield robust, accurate numerical solutions to both the compressible and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for laminar and turbulent flows. This work presents an application of mesh entity based, hierarchical basis functions to a new stabilized finite element formulation, exploiting the capability to grade polynomial order while maintaining C0 continuity while using traditional finite element data structures. The hierarchical basis accomplishes this by starting with vertex interpolants (a linear basis) and then allowing the polynomial order to vary on each entity (edges, faces, and regions) in the mesh which are then multiplied by blends within each element to build a composite function that is locally higher order but still globally continuous. Details of this formulation and its efficient implementation will be presented. Partition weighting schemes were developed to achieve optimal load balance and scalability for parallel simulations. An application is presented, of p-refinement applied to a laminar flow past a surface mounted unit cube placed in a channel. Finally, post-processing techniques are also described for the effective visualization of higher order solutions.

A single-channel 10b 1GS/s ADC with 2-cycle latency using pipelined cascaded folding architecture.

$49.99

Military surveillance, airborne early warning, and target recognition systems are swift decision making applications that require high-speed, low-latency electronics. These systems employ high dynamic range Digital Radar Receiver (DRR) that place the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) as close to the antenna as possible. This mandates the use of ADC architectures that achieve 10b of accuracy at GHz conversion rates with SFDR over 60 dB. The key features of this work are now summarized. An open-loop track-and-hold (THA) amplifier with enhanced linearity is designed to meet the wide dynamic range DDR specification. It maintains a linearity of 10.9b at low frequencies, with a negligible drop, to 10.5b at the Nyquist Frequency of 500MHz. Utilizing a single-channel quantizer and a highly linear front-end THA, the proposed ADC is not susceptible to the timing misalignments and limited linearity prevalent in CMOS time-interleaved architectures. The conversion speed of this ADC is improved by incorporating low-power distributed BiCMOS THAs after each folder. This significantly relieves the settling requirements by allowing each folder to settle within a dedicated clock cycle. An on-chip clock generator is designed to shift the phase of the master clock in eight steps, each 125ps, controlled by an off-chip three position switch. This is devised to ensure that, under random variations, pipeline stages sampling occurs after the dynamics of their inputs have subsided. A single-channel 10b 1GS/s ADC employing pipelined cascaded folding architecture is reported to achieve latency as low as 2 clock cycles for high dynamic range DRR applications. This ADC achieves a record 55.6dB peak SNDR and a 64dB peak SFDR. The DNL and INL at the sampling rate of 1GS/s are measured < 0.4LSB and 1.1LSB, respectively. Implemented in a 0.35microm SiGe BiCMOS technology, the designed converter consumes 2W of power and occupies an active area of 4.5×1.2mm2.

A study of rotationally constrained convection in tall aspect ratio annular geometries.

$49.99

The focus of this thesis is the study of rotationally constrained convection. This problem is studied in the frame work of the tall rotating differentially heated annulus, where the thermal forcing is aligned perpendicular to gravity and rotation. This geometric configuration acts as a canonical model for large scale atmospheric circulation and related geophysical systems. Experimentation, asymptotic reduction, derivation of steady states, linear stability analysis and computational modeling are combined to provide a rich study of the nature of the fluid dynamics. The asymptotic model derived from the Navier Stokes equations extends previous work to the cylindrical domain, and accurately reproduces steady state solutions and stability features observed in laboratory experiments.;Developed in parallel to this work is a new technique for solving discretized partial differential equations with Chebyshev spectral methods. This technique is shown to be very efficient and adaptable in Cartesian, cylindrical and spherical geometries. This new methodology has additional applications including eigenvalue analysis, where the method is used to validate a long held assumption about Rayleigh Benard convection.
