What kind of men’s golf set should I get? Should I get it shortened or just leave it & choke down on it?

I’m an 18 year old female who’s height is 5’2 & weighs 115. I have played golf for a year under 3 coaches who coaches me 3x a week. I plan to compete in less than 2 years down the road in a University once I transfer using men’s graphite golf clubs. Right now, I’m still deciding on what kind of golf clubs I should buy so if you could just give me the # of the kind of golf clubs you think will work for me; it’ll be greatly appreciated & if you have another suggestion, please feel free to tell me, thanks in advance!

1. TaylorMade R7 CGBD
2. TaylorMade R9
3. Callaway Diablo Edge
4. Callaway Diablo Octane
5. Callaway Big Bertha
6. Titleist AP2

Once I buy the golf clubs, do you think I should get it shortened/cut down or leave it as is & just just choke down? What do you think?

The golf set I’m currently using is a 10-20 years old Lynx Tigress G graphite golf set.

JA this is coming from a female 5’0″ somewhere around 100#. I have preferred mens clubs as well. I presently have a driver, 4wood, 5wood, 21degree hybrid, 24degree hybrid in my bag that are mens….mens with a senior shaft. With these clubs the swing plane is more of a flat swing, a sweeping motion so the length is not a problem, I just step further away and have a slightly wider stance, but with the added length; can get more distance. My irons are also a mens, however when I was fitted for them, in order to accommodate the steeper swing plane I needed to change the shafts to a womens (shorter in length than a mens senior, same flex). I chose the mens clubs because I liked these specific clubs which were not made in a womens club (Ping seems to make different clubs for the genders ie…Rhapsody, Faith vs Rapture etc). My swing speed can keep up with a mens senior flex and easily hits a womens flex (very close to the same, a flex could be different from manufacture to manufacture; what might be a stiff to one, may be a regular to another). The question is….what’s your swing speed? That is what is going to make all the difference. This old set 10-20yrs ago (irons were made shorter then), Lynx Tigress G graphite…the “Tigress” part leads me to believe this might be a womens set? Are they too “whippy”? If they are a womens set and you’re finding your swing speed is sufficient to handle a mens regular flex or more; but can’t handle the length; yes you could cut your clubs down, yes it would alter the clubs performance, the shaft would have less flex, increased torque and less distance. If you choked up you would once again have modified your club and have less distance. Learning to choke up on your clubs to modify you distance can be one of the best skills a golfer possesses, it’s called feel instead of having that 160, 150, 140 etc club. When you can pick up one club in your bag and play it though a hole by choking up, you have an advantage over many. So what do you do? If the reason for the mens club is because of the need for a stiffer shaft…maybe look for a shaft that is frequency matched from the factory and not tip cut to alter flex, or purchase a mens senior, cut back and lose some flex altering it to more of a mens regular flex. If your choice for a mens club has nothing to do with your swing speed, its time to really think it over better. Probably the best advice any of us could give you is to discuss this with one or all three of your coaches, who have watched and mentored your game over the last year..they are sure to know the caliber of golfer you are. Taylormade R7CGB, Callaway Big Bertha discontinued. Callaway Diablo Octane irons not released. Titleist AP2 Advanced Player Club (smaller sweet spot, unforgiving with mishits, + control, shot shaping). If you are interested in these clubs head to a golf superstore and demo them all, after just a demo, you may be down to 1 or 2 or have even found something that might work better. You have a lot of time, so don’t rush into a decision, test, get fitted and wait for a big sale.
