How to Fix Audio Drivers Quickly and Easily
You count on your speakers or headphones to produce sound, but when audio drivers break, you won’t have sound functionality. There are a multitude of different brands of speakers, audio devices, headsets, and headphones out there, and they all require unique drivers.
If you don’t fix them, you might have to deal with crackling speakers, static, or no sound at all. Here are common symptoms for sound problems, and how to resolve them.
Windows Fix It
The first thing you can try to do is simply run the Windows Fix It program. This tool is available on Windows Support, and will basically troubleshoot your sound issues so that you can pinpoint the cause of the problem. However, if drivers are outdated, this won’t do much good. Still, if you’re dealing with device issues that can be resolved without too much difficulty, try the Windows Fix It feature.
Checking Your Sound Card
Now, let’s say you’ve tried it, but you still can’t hear anything from your computer. First of all, you should always do a double-check to ensure that you have the proper sound card installed. If you do, try the following:
1. Go to the Start menu and open up the Device Manager. You can find this in the Control Panel under the Hardware and Devices submenu, or the System and Maintenance submenu, depending on what version of Windows you’re running. You might need to put in a password here.
2. Once you have accomplished this, go ahead and open up the category labeled Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. If you’ve installed a sound card, it’ll be displayed here. If not, you have to install a sound card.
3. Look at the sound card displayed in the dialog box. Do you see a yellow question mark displayed next to the icon for the sound card? If so, you’re dealing with a problem. You should right-click the sound card and select “Properties.”
4. You’ll need to open up the “General” tab and see what it says underneath “Device Status.” It’ll display information related to the device here.
Also, it’s imperative to check your speakers and confirm that you’ve plugged them in securely and that they’re going into the right power source. Be sure that they are powered on. If they are, then verify that the input is going into the computer firmly. Also be sure you haven’t mixed up the microphone and headphone inputs, it can be easy to confuse them.
Finally, check your speaker volume, sometimes it you may have muted it or turned it down extremely low. These might seem extremely obvious, but even the slightest disconnection or hardware issue can be easily missed.
Now, if you’re still dealing with audio problems, it’s very likely that faulty drivers are the cause. You can always run a basic Windows Update to find new drivers. Windows Update will scan your system using Microsoft’s database to find you new drivers.
This can be good if you’re dealing with stock products, but if you’ve bought a pair of headphones or speakers, it’s likely that you’ll need to directly visit the manufacturer’s website. This would entail a manual install of drivers, which is very involved, and very labor intensive.
What About Driver Update Software?
There’s a simple way to resolve these driver problems, and that’s just to simply utilize driver update software. Driver update software is streamlined to check your system for outdated drivers and replace them quickly.
It can really help to have driver update software, especially because the program does all of the work for you. Try driver update software if you need to quickly repair audio drivers. It’s one of the most efficient ways to get your sound functionality working again.
