Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is caused because of a viral infection and can spread from an infected person to another mostly through the fecal-route. In less that 1 percent of the cases, the virus attacks the central nervous system and destroys the motor neurons. This leads to weakness in the muscles and acute paralysis.
The most common form of polio is the spinal polio. Here the muscles responsible for movement are affected. There is no cure for the disease but vaccination developed by Dr Jonas Salk in 1952 and Albert Sabin in 1962 has helped reduce the number of cases in the United States.
Here is a list of some of the famous people with poliomyelitis:
o Donald Sutherland: A famous actor born on July 17, 1935. He was a sickly child and suffered from rheumatic fever and hepatitis. It was in his childhood that he contracted polio. However, it did not stop him and he went on to earn fame and name for himself.
o Franklin D. Roosevelt: The 32nd President of the United States was born on January 30, 1882. He contracted the disease in August 1921 when he was vacationing with his family at Campobello Island, New Brunswick. Popularly known as FDR, Roosevelt tried a lot of different cures to help his atrophied legs to no avail.
o Arthur C. Clarke: This British science fiction writer and inventor also developed polio as a child but it did not stop him from becoming one of the greatest writers of his genre.
o Jack Nicklaus: Popularly known as The Golden Bear suffered from a mild case of the disease at a young age but it did not stop him from becoming one of the best professional golfers of his time.
o Mia Farrow: The popular Hollywood actress survived the disease as a child and has spent a lot of time as an adult educating people about the disease. He helped launch a polio immunization day in the US that was meant for children under the age of 5 years.

Where did Jack Nicklaus get his nickname “The Golden Bear?”?
Also, did I put the question mark in the right place?
Jack Nicklaus went to Upper Arlington High School just outside of Columbus, Ohio. The Upper Arlington athletic teams are known as “The Golden Bears.” When Jack went to College at Ohio State, the “Golden Bear” knickname stuck with him as a carryover from what his high school mascott was. It’s got nothing to do with his build or hair.
