My Suburban Shtetl $22.95 Grandpa’s been arrested for hitting a Nazi with a salami! So begins Robert Rand’s engaging novel of growing up in Skokie, Illinois, home to one of America’s largest communities of Jewish Holocaust survivors and to Rand’s alter ego, Bobby Bakalchuk. In 1977 Skokie made news as Nazis sought to march down its main street. The enraged citizens ignited a storm over the First Amendment, spurring Bobby’s Grandpa Abe Yellin to the front line armed with an all-beef 100% kosher projectile.Under Bobby’s keen eye, the 1960s and 1970s are resurrected via the characters and curiosities that shape his young life — from the Cuban Missile Crisis to radioactive Ping Pong balls; from a prayer shawl abandoned in Auschwitz to the racial divide. This utterly American story describes an immigrant community grappling with the same cultural issues and moral choices faced by previous and subsequent newcomers. Perceived as different, Skokie’s Jews and their offspring struggle to comprehend — and fit into — the political, racial, and cultural stew that is the United States. With characteristic wit and insight, Rand explores their plight. In so doing he sheds light on the complexity and consequence of intolerance, and the meaning of ethnicity — and home. |

The Cosmic Wheel $4.99 Sci-Fi Larry Niven Hails as “Dark” And “Funny!” Mars, the church, media and world crisis come together in a heady mix that will remind some readers of James Morrow and others of Frederik Pohl. Not since Dr. Strangelove has there been such a wildly cynical science fictional look at the world we live in! From an April Fool joke gone wrong, to an imitation alien bilking the rich, The Cosmic Wheel turns through a near future filled with sex, blasphemy, and a satiric look at life in the mid-21st Century. Michael Brandise, Public Relations Director for NASA searches for the meaning of it all, with a few rolls in the hay along the way. Fastidious Maryanne Thinready is looking for a way to break off a love affair gone sour, while her husband finds comfort in the arms of a woman with unique ideas about the Hereafter. The irreverent Pope Glorious the First, the closest thing to an anti-Pope the modern world has seen, wonders where he went wrong. Pint-sized Childe Osbourne, entertainment’s biggest star since that little girl with the golden curls, enjoys big graveyards and big women, often at the same time. In the midst of the mayhem, Jason Christopher Woodman rockets into space, while newspaper editor Carl Fawcett and roving reporter Nilla Bristol record it all with a jaundiced eye and hopes for a better future. No wonder multiple award-winning science fiction author Larry Niven says, “Reading The Cosmic Wheel was something like watching a Ping Pong game played by thousands of players around a table the size of a world. Dark humor. Funny stuff, The Cosmic Wheel.” Cover: Elspeth Fahey |

The potential number of uses for Clipart in documents and web design is infinite. The only thing limiting the creative use of images is the imagination and ability of the user. Just a few interesting pictures downloaded from online sources and used as Clipart can improve the look of virtually any document and the right images will transform it into one that people will actually want to look at and enjoy.
Artwork and photographs can tell stories in ways that no amount of words can, and Clipart does basically the same thing. The right picture can enable readers or viewers to visualize what the writer is describing. Using Clipart beside text will make a few descriptive lines come alive.
What Is Clipart?
The term ‘Clipart’ refers to images that can be copied from a source and easily pasted into a document in a computer. An example of such art would be a stylized letter or a picture of a Christmas tree that could be pasted on a Christmas card or menu.
Where to Find Images to Use as Clipart?
- Websites such as Clipart.com
- Publishing programs such as Microsoft Publisher. Many publishing programs contain a data base of artwork that can be used in any document
- Your own pictures or designs that can you paste into a document such as a Christmas card
- All over the internet
- Scanned pictures and drawings
Something to remember is to never use artwork unless you know it is in the public domain. Many popular images such as cartoon characters, logos, comic book characters, pictures of movie stars and signers are copyrighted. This means you could get into legal trouble by using such images without paying for them or getting permission.
Use Christmas Clipart to Enhance Documents
The variety and widespread use of artwork and other images found online are limited only by a person’s creativity. If you want to create your own unique holiday cards or if you simply want to e-mail a letter, you can customize it by embedding a Clipart. During the holiday season there are many great uses for Christmas Clipart:
- Christmas Clipart cards: a person can use Clipart and a printer to create their own Christmas cards
- Christmas stationary: one could paste Christmas images such as trees, Santa or snowmen onto the stationary and create a beautiful Christmas stationary
- PowerPoint presentations. Adding a few Christmas Clipart images or other holiday images could really spice up a PowerPoint during that time of year.
- Invitations: Christmas Clipart look great on invitations to holiday parties and other events.
- Posters and fliers: Professional grade images can really enhance posters and flyers that advertise holiday parties and other events.
All of these items can easily be created with artwork found online or on a computer. The average person should be able to locate all of the images needed to create such artwork in a few minutes and simply use Clipart to include them in their document.
Barry S Jennings has a blog about clipart as well as a web site where you can get creative Christmas Clipart.
