Quad Driver
Many families like to go on adventure holidays where hiking, river rafting and quad biking abound. But not all adventure activities are truly little kid-friendly, one of the most contentious being quad biking. There are two schools of thought when it comes to quad biking for kids; one maintains that quads teach children valuable lessons about driving later on in life, as well as coordination, motor control (take that any way you want) and, interestingly, how to follow instructions. The second believes that quads are inherently dangerous and that children under a certain age (which varies between 12 and 16 years old) shouldn’t be allowed to drive them, not even under full adult supervision or on private land.
American research into the rate of injury and death to children under the age of 16 while driving quads revealed some rather frightening statistics. The actual rate of death and injury was described in terms of “epidemic” proportions. In the 20 years between 1982 and 2002 over 500 000 children were injured while driving quad or ATVs (all terrain vehicles), since 1997 the number of injuries and deaths has increased year-on-year.
Most children who are injured or killed in quad biking accidents are under the age of 16 and the same age group is twice as likely as older riders to require emergency room treatment following an accident. The injuries received by children are also likely to be more severe and require longer and more intense treatment than those of old riders. The most common include head and spinal injuries.
New Zealand-based research reveals figures that are possibly even scarier than those from the US. The youngest quad bike driver involved in an accident was just two years old and the average age of children injured was just over nine. Only 14 per cent of children injured in quad accidents were wearing a helmet, which explains the prevalence of skull fractures and facial injuries.
Researchers across the world are finding similar results (although no other two-year-old drivers have been reported), which has prompted safety groups to call for tighter controls when it comes to quad biking and quad bike sales. Suggestions include certified compulsory training with all quad purchases and age-related restrictions on engine size.
Tips for parents
If you and your child are going to go quad biking together, there are some important things to bear in mind.
Choosing a quad bike:
• Don’t skimp on quality. Your child’s life is at stake, so now is not the time to try the very cheap, unknown brand from Somalia. Brand names have reputations for a reason, and should things go wrong they are easier to repair.
• Size matters. Many parents buy quads that are too big for their children, so that they will last longer. This is a huge mistake because children don’t have the strength or dexterity to control quad bikes at the best of times. When bikes are too big the danger of accidents increases exponentially. It’s very important that your child can reach all the controls (handlebars, brakes, and accelerator) comfortably. If quad biking is going to be a fixture in your child’s life, make sure he or she takes good care of it so you can sell it for a reasonable price when the time comes to upsize.
• Look for safety features such as cut-off switches to prevent speeding.
• The younger the child, the smaller the engine. 50cc engines with a top speed of 6kph are all a child under the age of five needs.
Safety first:
• Never leave your little biker unattended; even at 6kph accidents can happen quickly.
• Always wear a helmet. Other safety gear, such as gloves, elbow and knee pads and goggles are also important.
• Never ride at night.
• Never ride on a public road.
• Never ride double.
• Always treat other riders courteously.
The bottom line is that quad biking can be dangerous, but with the proper care, training and equipment it needn’t be much riskier than taking your kids mountain biking or river rafting (especially in rapids). Remember the tips, keep them supervised at all times and your little rays of sunshine should be just fine.
