I had a similar problem with my car. I think you need to check the speedo cable. This means disconnecting the cable from the gearbox and seeing if you can pull out the inner cable. If you can then that means that the retaining dimples at the lower end of the cable have worn away and the inner cable has dropped out of the speedometer. One way to test this is to connect the inner cable to a battery power drill and spin it slowly while pushing it gently back into the outer cable. If all is well then it should reconnect with the speedometer drive. It is then necessary to pinch the retaining dimples to hold the inner cable in place. Good Luck.
