If my sand wedge goes 60 yards,about how long would my pitch,chip,and punch shots be if I used my sand wedge?

If I used my sand wedge (which goes 60 yards) to pitch, chip, and punch, about how long would all three of those shots go? Just a close estimate people, I won’t be able to see before the next time I go golfing, so this needs to be somewhat accurate.

A chip shot is when you are a few feet off the green and you take a swing similar to a putting stroke. If you do that with a sand wedge the ball will land and stop with very little roll. Therefore if you chip with your sand wedge you want to fly it close to the hole. Note: Many people use a pitching wedge or 8 iron to chip as they prefer to have less air time and more roll.

A pitch shot is when your distance is more easily measured in yards and you use a partial swing. So if you are 30 yards a half swing should get you close since a full swing goes 60 yards. This assumes you hit a confident shot which is easier said than done.

A punch shot is where you have an overhang, usually a tree, and you have to hit the ball low to advance it. Since a sand wedge is one of the most lofted clubs in your bag it is not designed for a punch shot. You will want to use a low lofted club like a 4, 5, or 6 iron.

One final note, all three shots are touch shots/short game shots. They are different than your irons, hybrids and woods where you take a full swing and the ball travels a fixed distance. With the short game shots you are varying your swing to be more precise on the distance. That means each chip shot is different than the last but every full swing with an iron is the same.

I point this out because if you are playing golf on a regular basis, the short game is the last thing to come around and it’s the first to go when you have even a minor layoff. So if you play twice a week for a month and then miss a week, know that you’ll pick up a few extra strokes around the green because you short game will have taken a step back. Align your expectations accordingly and you will have much more fun.
