1969 In Northern Ireland $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: 1969 Northern Ireland Riots, Battle of the Bogside, Northern Ireland General Election, 1969, All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1969, Ulster Unionist Party Leadership Election, 1969, Census Act 1969. Excerpt: From 13-17 August 1969, Northern Ireland was rocked by intensive sectarian rioting. The riots broke out in response to the Battle of the Bogside in Derry, a three day confrontation between the Catholic nationalist residents of the Bogside and the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). Riots were launched elsewhere in Northern Ireland in support of the Bogsiders, in turn provoking attacks by the RUC and loyalists. The most bloody rioting was in Belfast, where seven people were killed and hundreds more wounded. In addition, thousands of families were driven from their homes. The events of August 1969 are widely seen as the beginning of the conflict known as the “Troubles”. Northern Ireland was destabilised throughout 1968 by sporadic rioting arising out the civil disobedience campaign of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA), which was demanding an end to discrimination against Catholics in voting rights, housing and employment. The first major incident occurred in Derry on 5 October 1968, when an NICRA march was baton-charged by the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) police. Disturbed by the prospect of major violence, the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, Terence O’Neill, promised reforms in return for a “truce”, whereby no further demonstrations would be held. However the truce was broken in January 1969, when People’s Democracy, a radical left-wing group, staged an anti-government march from Belfast to Derry. The marchers were attacked at Burntollet bridge, five miles (8 km) outside Derry by militant loyalist Protestant… More: |

9/11 Commision Report with Related Documents $4.36 The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 left Americans wondering how such a breach of security could have occurred. Relatives and friends of the victims pushed for the creation of a National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States to investigate the government’s preparedness for and response to the attacks and to provide recommendations for preventing future disasters. As Senior Advisor to the 9/11 Commission, Ernest R. May provides students with a firsthand account of the commission’s methods and actions. His introduction, which describes the drafting process and the collaboration of the commissioners despite the bitter political divisions surrounding them, allows students to view the report as an historical document. The report itself has been carefully abridged for the classroom while preserving the essence of the complete version. A cast of characters, a glossary of political acronyms, a chronology, a selected bibliography, and questions for consideration make this edition ideal for students. |

A Hope In The Unseen (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) $22.1 At Ballou Senior High, a crime-infested school in Washington, D.C., honor students have learned to keep their heads down. Like most inner-city kids, they know that any special attention in a place this dangerous can make you a target of violence. But Cedric Jennings will not swallow his pride, and with unwavering support from his mother, he studies and strives as if his life depends on it—and it does. The summer after his junior year, at a program for minorities at MIT, he gets a fleeting glimpse of life outside, a glimpse that turns into a face-on challenge one year later: acceptance into Brown University, an Ivy League school. At Brown, finding himself far behind most of the other freshmen, Cedric must manage a bewildering array of intellectual and social challenges. Cedric had hoped that at college he would finally find a place to fit in, but he discovers he has little in common with either the white students, many of whom come from privileged backgrounds, or the middle-class blacks. Having traveled too far to turn back, Cedric is left to rely on his faith, his intelligence, and his determination to keep alive his hope in the unseen—a future of acceptance and reward that he struggles, each day, to envision. |

Newspapers with similar names and readership.
This Johnson-County-KS newspaper (thebesttimes.org) is not to be confused with the following two senior publications having coincidentally similar names.
1. The Best Times (thebesttimes.com), which is a Memphis-TN newspaper covering a large region of the Mid-southern part of the U.S.
2. The Best of Times Online (seniorsceneonline.com), which is a large publication out of Shreveport, LA.
All three of these papers have a readership of 100,000 people, more or less.
Purpose of senior newspapers.
This Johnson-county-KS The Best Times newspaper along with the above two and hundreds of other ones around the country celebrate and support human maturity. Their articles and snippets will challenge, educate, enhance, enlighten, entertain, fulfill, help, inform, inspire, persuade, serve, and support maturing seniors.
Their general subjects include avocations, the arts, diet, elder law, estate planning, entertainment, finances, fitness, healthcare, hobbies, housing, improvement, intellect, lifestyle, Medicare, memories, news, nostalgia, nutrition, politics, recreation, resources, retirement, society, Social Security, spirituality, travel, volunteering, and well-being.
Specific focus of this newspaper.
The Best Times in KS has another specific theme – acknowledging the average person who has contributed to the world quietly. This newspaper’s descriptive profiles of maturing people covers interesting hobbies, careers, vocations, skills, talents, histories, service, or charitable contributions. These people have left something behind for others to enjoy, or have left something that lives on in time. Recognitions are also given to local senior volunteers and to older veterans. This paper is also open to contributions from freelance and professional writers in addition to the experts on aging and those commercially involved with aging populations.
Recently, one of its cover stories was about four women who served in World War II along with 350,000 other women. Another profile was covered a retired male artist, who, behind the scenes, inked out the final cartoons for a famous comic strip. Still another one introduced a 108-year-old local baseball/basketball fan who surprised visiting celebrities with her sweet engaging manner.
Its history.
The Best Times began in 1982 as a two-month pilot program via a grant from the Older Americans Act and the state of KS. At that time, it was put together and mailed-out by volunteers. It turned out to be very popular fast.
It then became a publication of the Johnson County Human Services and Aging, now published monthly in full color. It is mailed free to all county residences having someone aged 60 and over living there. For those outside the county, it can be acquired for a $15 annual subscription fee.
Its features include:

opinions on playing soccer on a severely sprained ankle. college senior 3 games left.?
so i sprained my ankle, it’s still swollen, bruised, and very painful. i can walk and run a straight line with moderate pain. it hurts badly to touch and feels very unstable however it is only a sprain. the athletic training staff recommends i do not play, if i was a junior in college or if this was earlier in the season i would not play HOWEVER, it’s senior day. it’s my last home game EVER. my entire family will be there, even extended family who has never seen me play. what should i do? opinions please and thanks.
Instead of showing off poor soccer skills due to your injury, show off how mature you are by deciding NOT to play. Let your team and family know that while you love soccer, and your team, you highly value your personal health. You don’t want to further injure your ankle, and risk having to have a pricey surgery. Remember all the good games you have had, and think about all the good games you’re going to have if you take care of yourself like you should!
You’ve got a whole life of soccer (and everything else) ahead of you, and you don’t want it spoiled by a bum ankle.
Take plenty of pictures the day of the game, and cheer for your team like you’ve never done before. Wear your team’s colors all over! You can still be apart of your team, and be supportive of your team, even though you’re injured. Everyone will understand!!!!
Get better!
