Close Up 1927-1933: Cinema and Modernism $29.96 Close Up was the first English-language journal of film theory. Published between 1927 and 1933, it billed itself as “the only magazine devoted to film as an art,” promising readers “theory and analysis: no gossip.” The journal was edited by the writer and filmmaker Kenneth Macpherson, the novelist Winifred Bryher, and the poet H. D., and it attracted contributions from such major figures as Dorothy Richardson, Sergei Eisenstein, and Man Ray. This anthology presents some of the liveliest and most important articles from the publication’s short but influential history. The writing in Close Up was theoretically astute, politically incisive, open to emerging ideas from psychoanalysis, passionately committed to “pure cinema,” and deeply critical of Hollywood and its European imitators. The articles collected here cover such subjects as women and film, “The Negro in Cinema,” Russian and working-class cinema, and developments in film technology, including the much debated addition of sound. The contributors are a cosmopolitan cast, reflecting the journal’s commitment to internationalism; Close Up was published from Switzerland, printed in England and France, and distributed in Paris, Berlin, London, New York, and Los Angeles. The editors of this volume present a substantial introduction and commentaries on the articles that set Close Up in historical and intellectual context. This is crucial reading for anyone interested in the origins of film theory and the relationship between cinema and modernism. |

No Mentor but Myself: Jack London on Writing and Writers $14.95 Jack London, one of the most read and recognized figures in American literature, produced an immense body of work, including 22 novels, 200 short stories, memoirs, newspaper articles, book reviews, essays, and poems. A significant and revealing feature of London’s literary life lies in his introspective observations on the craft of writing, brought together in this collection of essays, reviews, letters, and autobiographical writings. London’s public role as a daring, carefree man of action has obscured the shrewd, disciplined, and methodical writer whose practical reflections and meditations on his profession provide a vivid portrait of the literary industry in turn-of-the-century America. For this edition, a significant amount of new material has been added.Reviews of the First Edition“Dale Walker has rendered a valuable service in his painstaking collection of London’s writings about writers. He has included 43 selections, 20 of which are previously uncollected: 13 essays, and excerpts from London’s two autobiographical works. The result is a remarkably comprehensive view of London ‘the writer’s writer.’”—American Literary Realism“An absorbing account of how hard the writer worked to learn his craft. . . . We find a master prose stylist concerned with problems of selectivity and concrete issues of tone, form, atmosphere, and point of view.”—Modern Philology“A remarkable collection. . . . This is a firsthand look at a writer’s honest and forthright opinions on his craft.”—Los Angeles Times |

‘Smiles’ $0.99 The man came to a stop, a look of humiliation and deep self-disgust on his bronzed face. With methodical care he leaned his rifle against the seamed trunk of a forest patriarch and drew the sleeve of his hunting shirt across his forehead, now glistening with beads of sweat; then, and not until then, did he relieve his injured feelings by giving voice to a short but soul-satisfying expletive. At the sound of his deep voice the dog, which had, panting, dropped at his feet after a wild, purposeless dash through the underbrush, looked up with bright eyes whose expression conveyed both worship and a question, and, as the man bent and stroked his wiry coat, rustled the pine needles with his stubby tail. |

Hear my `word.’ You have slain my dog–my white hunting dog, the last of his breed–who can outrun every other hunting dog in the land, even as the wind outstrippeth the crawling ox-wagon, and you have shed my blood, the blood of a chief. You had better first have cut off your right hand, for it is better to lose a hand than one’s mind. This is my `word,’ Umlilwane–bear it in memory, for you have struck a chief–a man of the House of Gcaleka.”[Umlilwane: "Little Fire"--Kafirs are fond of bestowing nicknames. (re)collector. $49.99 In Julio Cortazar’s short story ‘Las Babas del Diablo’, a photographer sees a woman talking to a boy in a park and decides to take their picture. On returning to his studio to develop the image, he notices additional elements in the scene: in particular a man in a parked car, who seems to know the woman. Cortazar’s story explores the blurred distinction between reality and its image, showing us that both are always simply a perception of events. (re)collector is a public art work, temporarily installed in Cambridge, England. Ten cameras were installed throughout the city center, programmed to recognize and record public behaviors that corresponded to scenes from ‘Blow-Up’, Michelangelo Antonioni’s classic 1966 interpretation of Cortazar’s story. At the end of each of the four days that the project was exhibited, the footage captured by the cameras was automatically reorganized into a narrative based upon corresponding lines from ‘Las Babas del Diablo’, and projected into the city center. As with Antonioni’s movie, each of the films generated by the (re)collector system is a version of Cortazar’s story: not simply an adaptation, rather an infinite re-staging that attempts to piece together the fragmented experience of everyday life in the city. Chapter One of the thesis provides an overview of systems-based approaches to art, focusing specifically on theories developed by Jack Burnham in the early 1970s. Chapter Two discusses the experiential nature of hybrid real/virtual spaces, within the context of the notion of The Sublime. Chapter Three looks at the blurred boundaries between art and reality that is the consequence of systems art when embedded within real-time social environments. Chapter Four provides an overview of the (re)collector project, contextualizing it art historically and methodologically. Chapter Five assesses future directions for the project, identifying its key contributions to the field in general. |

Short Man

Short Men – Reviewing Tips Regarding Clothing Styles
When an individual of shorter stature is seeking clothing, there are usually no shortages of available sizes which will come close to fitting them. Nonetheless, simply because an article of clothing fits, it may not mean that it is the best fit for you. When you are a short guy you usually have to take additional effort in finding the best clothing for you. While not every clothing store may carry clothing that is tailored for your height there are several stores that will offer you the best fit. However when you have difficulty finding these stores there are usually rules for the short guy to follow concerning styles for short men.
Simplicity of the shirt is the key focus and the first guideline when picking styles for short men. Finding a shirt that fits well is necessary, as an ill-fitted shirt could make you look smaller than you’re – and regardless of the style, for shorter men a well-fitted shirt in a classic style can improve your look dramatically.
Round collared shirts are often not the best friend of the short guy and (unless you are style conscious enough to know how to pair them with other clothes) usually are not suggested styles for short men. V-neck shirt styles, on the other hand, are perfect as they assist to add length to the shirt appearance, complementing the short guy’s stature instead of accenting their shorter stature.
Even, ensure your shirt is of the suitable length as the best styles for short men are with clothing which fit properly and are not excessively long, either in the sleeves or such that the pockets are too low on the torso. Focus on finding shirts which are proportionate to your body, as overly large clothing will make it seem as though you don’t care about your look.
The next guideline for styles for short men focuses on pants and pant length. Many short guys (OK, any guys) do not pay a great deal of attention to the length of their pants and this could help in displaying their shorter stature. Conventional pants have really long inseam lengths and for a short man these inseams can be very long. This can make the pants looks too long for the short guy, and women will get an impression that you don’t care about your personal appearance. When you are buying pants make sure to check the inseam of the pants and how they fit you – you do not want a lot of fabric gathered around the cuffs. The bottom of the pant leg, at the back of your foot, should be half an inch to an inch off the ground when you are wearing shoes. Different manufactures have different inseam measurements and when one size may fit perfectly it could be a completely different story form a different brand, so make sure to try them on.
Moreover be sure to budget for shrinkage with jeans and cotton pants, as unfortunately for us shorter guys a half inch of shrinking on pants could make a much bigger difference on our pants than for longer inseams. With styles for short men its not often a size problem but a brand issue and what that company makes use of as their appropriate lengths – find a brand that works, and learn how their pants shrink, and stick with it so you have constantly great looking pants with bare minimum effort.
It is best if you give your pants to the tailor to customize. Having a perfectly fitted pair of pants is not just an indicator to women that you care about your appearance, but you will actually start to feel more confident in your look as you wear them and more people notice the great fit.
Clothing is something that is available in massive quantities of every shape and size – and with the right amount of time spent any short guy could discover sizes and styles for short men that not only make you look great, but feel great.
