By now most of you will have probably heard about the rule change that is going to affect the wedge. The new grooves must be smaller and much shallower in comparison. According to the USGA’s website, “The revisions are designed to restore the playing shots to the green from the rough by reducing backspin on those shots. The initial focus of the new rules will be competitions involving highly skilled professional golfers and will have little impact on the play of most golfers.”

For the 2010 PGA Tour season you have seen that all Tour players are playing with wedges that conform to the new rule change. However amateur golfers don’t have to worry about changing their wedge until 2024.

Is it common practice to use a high-loft Vokey wedge as a Sand Wedge?

It seems rong to use such an expensive club for such a purpose.

They’re called “sand wedges” for a reason. Any wedge can be used in the sand, obviously, but wedges with lofts between 54* and 58* are specifically designed to be used to get out of the sand.

The sand won’t hurt the club cosmetically that much. It will take many, many strokes in the sand to hurt the club’s looks, and then you’ll mostly just dull the shine. The only thing that could really cause damage is if you hit a rock while you swing. You’re more likely to ding up your Vokey against your other clubs if you leave it uncovered in your bag while you carry it.
