Can air really get white-hot without being a plasma?
In lightning, I’ve heard that air gets so hot that it turns into a white-hot plasma that conducts the electricity. Is this true? If so, can air become white-hot without being ionized?
But CAN air turn white, like it does with lightning, just by having tremendous amount of heat?
When things get very hot, they emit energy in the visible spectrum. the hotter they are, the further up the spectrum they emit light. At a high temperature, things get red. When they are still hotter, they get orange, and eventually white. This is connected to the way energy is absorbed and then re-emitted by each atom or molecule.
When there is enough energy in the atoms/molecules to emit these colors, the electrons are in a very excited state, and not so tightly bound to the nuclei, but unless there is a strong electrical/magnetic field, they will not move far away from the nuclei and will not form a plasma.
So yes, you can have iron, or air or whatever at a temperature high enough to emit white light without it turning into a plasma.
There will be temperatures at which the electron structure is no longer significant – where all materials effectively become plasma, but that is generally much MUCH higher than what is needed to produce white light, which is about 6,000 degrees Celsius.
