While it¹s nominally linked to Crowe’s movie of the same name, it feels like a leisurely stroll down his record shelves. The tone here is a lot more varied than on the first CD, which was mostly rootsy Americana. Sure, there are return a… |

Fateful Harvest $10.99 I see soil in a new light, and I wonder about my own lawn and garden. What have I sprinkled on my backyard? Is somebody using my home, my food, to recycle toxic wasn’te? It seems unbelievable, outlandish — but what if it’s true?A riveting expose, Fateful Harvest tells the story of Patty Martin — the mayor of a small Washington town called Quincy — who discovers American industries are dumping toxic wasn’te into farmers’ fields and home gardens by labeling it “fertilizer.” She becomes outraged at the failed crops, sick horses, and rare diseases in her town, as well as the threats to her children’s health. Yet, when she blows the whistle on a nationwide problem, Patty Martin is nearly run out of town.Duff Wilson, whose Seattle Times series on this story was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, provides the definitive account of a new and alarming environmental scandal. Fateful Harvest is a gripping study of corruption and courage, of recklessness and reckoning. It is a story that speaks to the greatest fears — and ultimate hope — in us all. |

Fateful Harvest: The True Story of a Small Town, a Global Industry, and a Toxic Secret $0.99 Quincy, Washington, had been a sleepy northwestern farming town until its rest is disturbed by a shocking secret beneath its once-fertile fields: chemical manufacturers are disposing of leftover toxic waste by selling it to unsuspecting farmers as fertilizer. The tainted fertilizer — containing arsenic and cadmium, lead and dioxins-is believed to be destroying crops, sickening animals, and endangering the nation’s food supply. And owing to a gaping regulatory loophole, it is completely legal.Up against the secrecy and greed of powerful corporations, a local lifelong tomboy and mother of four will make an impassioned stand. Patty Martin begins a fateful journey that will lead to her election as mayor, but also invite the resentment of most of her neighbors for daring to confront the industry that has been Quincy’s lifeblood. Martin is joined by a small number of brave farmers who bring ingenuity, outrage, and an investigative reporter to the fight against seemingly insurmountable odds to expose the truth. They learn that toxic waste is turned into fertilizer around the world, spread on food-growing land, absorbed by plants, and, ultimately, consumed by all of us.Duff Wilson, whose Seattle Times series on this story was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, here provides the definitive account of a new and alarming environmental scandal. Fateful Harvest is a gripping study of corruption and courage, of recklessness and reckoning. It is a story that speaks to the greatest fears — and ultimate hope — in us all. |

If you are a vegetarian or are searching for something to make for your vegetarian family member or friends, give this recipe for Chinese Vegetarian Noodles a try. This is a quick and easy dish to make and is sure to impress the vegetarians in your group. The non-vegetarians will be impressed, too. Offer them a chicken breast, a slice of pork loin or something similar with their noodles!
CHINESE VEGETARIAN NOODLES
1 1/2 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp minced fresh ginger (1 tsp ground ginger)
1 1/2 tbsp curry powder (or less to suit your taste)
1/4 cup vegetable broth
3 tbsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp sugar
3/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper
1 1/2 tbsp corn oil
1 red onion, thinly sliced
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
4 cups thinly sliced cabbage
1/2 lb rice stick noodles (ethnic food section), softened in hot water and drained
Make a curry seasoning by mixing together the following:, garlic, ginger, curry powder; set aside.
Make a basic Chinese sauce by mixing together the vegetable broth, soy sauce, sugar, salt, pepper; set aside.
Heat a heavy skillet over high heat; add the oil and heat until hot, about 30 seconds. Add the curry seasoning and stir-fry until fragrant, about 10 seconds. Add the onion slices and stir-fry for a minute or until barely tender. Add the red and green peppers; stir-fry for another minute. Add the cabbage and cook for 2 or 3 minutes until everything is crisp tender. Add the Chinese sauce and the noodles. Carefully toss to mix. Cook, stirring, for 30 seconds. Best served hot.
Enjoy!
