A brief about Artist Stretcher Bars
Stretcher bars are the planed and sawed off bars of wood used to construct a stretcher frame on which a canvas can be mounted and painted. Art stretcher bars are usually arranged in a rectangular frame. Pre-fabricated stretchers come in segments with interlocking corners that can be fitted together. Corner supports can also be provided using simple woodworking techniques. The miter joint is the most popular method of adjusting corners on a stretcher. Butt joints can also be used in conjunction with gussets. After stretching the canvas, keys or small triangle wedges are inserted in the joint to give the canvas its final tension. When fastening the canvas, pressure should be distributed evenly around the stretcher to minimize warping due to unequal distribution of pull.
Types of stretcher bars:
Artist Stretcher Bars are available in four profile sizes. These bars do not twist and will sit perfectly on a flat surface. 1) Pro-Bar Pro (H: 18*W: 42) – this bar is 18mm deep and 42mm wide 2) Pro-Bar Exhibition (H: 38*W: 33) – this bar is 38mm deep and 33mm wide. 3) Pro-Bar Museum (H: 50*W: 38) – this bar is 50mm deep and 38mm wide. 4) Pro-Bar 2way (45*32) – this bar can be used in either profile to create a 32mm or a 45mm deep frame.
Most imported Art Stretcher bars are available in three profile sizes:-
- STF or SSB – a standard stretcher bar profile which is 40mm wide and 18mm deep. This design and 40mm width gives extra strength over longer lengths. It prevents “bowing” when stretching the canvas
- HZF or GSB are a Gallery Stretcher Bar which is 35mm wide and 38mm deep
- Economy 2 way profile, which is a 42*20 profile and can be used as a standard or a gallery bar
The profiles on the artist stretcher bars should be slightly rounded. This offers two advantages:
- The framer is able to see and obtain clear edges on images that have precise borders, and
- It also allows the canvas weave to “roll over” the profile rather than snap over a sharp edge which is a major cause of canvas cracking

I heard STF’s were amazing, BUT if i skate on skatepark ground (wood AND cement not mixed) will they still be good????? My Skatepark is X-Games skatepark Philly in Franklin Mills. In my opinion,Plan B are the most lightest and strongest decks.I also have heard that Armor light boards are good but i had a bad experience with darkstar boards.All wheels are good but for skatepark ground you should get 52mm-54mm wheels which are perefect for street and park skating.
